Do SATA HDD's require a SATA connection from PSU?

Probably a noob question.

Im not really sure if HDD's even draw directly from the PSU, I figured the MoBo handled that.

Anyways, Im about to order this PSU and it says it doesnt come with SATA connectors.

I wouldnt even have thought of checking something like that till I read it as a "con" in a review.

Any input appreciated.

HDDs do not draw power from the motherboard, but the PSU.

Depends on the HDD, some have both old-style and SATA power connectors, some have only SATA power connectors. There are adapters to change the old-style to SATA power.

judging from the back of those drives, they both look like it can fit a regular 4 pin molex connector as well as SATA power connector.

so you shouldn't need SATA adapter.

my Western Digital 200 GB SATA drive has both SATA and molex power connector (be sure to use just one and not both)

It's the same drive either way. It's the same 12V and 5V going to the drive if you look at the adapter. Next you're going to tell me that 100 lbs of bricks weighs more than 100lbs of feathers.

You're ordering from NCIX.. are you a Canadian?

You can get adapters to hook any power supply up to a SATA hard drive, your mobo should come w/ the necessary adapter. Then again, with such a sweet looking PSU, you might not want the ugliness of a molex-SATA adapter.

Fair enough (confused signal voltage with such) & I meant what I said about the SATA power connector. If I were talking about the "thing" that connects to the [SATA] power connector then I would've said [SATA] power plug, but if you wanna be critical about that then I'll rephrase it with

PSU > [SATA] Power Plug > [SATA] Power Connector > Hard Drive

or

The PSU feeds power to the hard drive(s) via a power cable which originates from the PSU & terminates @ the other end as a [SATA] power plug which is then plugged into a hard drive(s)'s [SATA] power connector & in turn supplies power to said device.

that psu doesnt come with a sata cable you need to contact them and they will send you one for free.

There is one advantage: if you use the SATA connector, then you have more molex connectors free for optical drives, additional fans, etc.
