"Do right by ______"

I don't remember ever hearing that until maybe a year or two ago as "do right by God". I thought it was some quaint country figure of speech, but it seems to be spreading. Some commercial just said "Your stomach is your core, so you want to do right by it".

How do you "do right by" something? The phrase makes no sense!!!
