Do revelations about Vioxx make you worry about the meds you take?

With 44% of Americans taking some manner of perscription medicine and big pharm seemingly less forthcoming than they should be about problems, have you questioned the long term effects of any medicine you're taking?

I don't take any medication, but the Vioxx problems make worry about two things:

1. Pharmaceutical companies who advertise heavily, convincing people that they need medication when they may in fact not.
2. Doctors who prescribe the latest and greatest drug on the market, rather than use "time tested" treatments.

1. Yeah, this irks me too. Ask your doctor if <<drug>> is right for you... well WTF is it for!?
2. I too think we should use leeches. 😉

3. Patent expirations and companies wilingness to release controversial findings that allow them to discontinue a drug just in time for a replacement w/ a new patent to be released.

The common side effects mentioned in drug ads on TV these days sound worse than the problems the drugs are trying to solve.

What, you don't want anal leakage to help ease minor joint pain?

Eh not really, I was taking Vioxx and it was working great, no side effects no pain, loved it, then some old people had to go have heart attacks.

Vioxx has helped millions of people....working in a hospital I see them and hear their stories everyday.

Only accurate way to truely test the long term affects of ANY drug is to ....*drumroll*.... actually run studies which span years in which case would push the release of the drug back so far. They are tested for years but to determine long term effects like 5-10 years later is hard to test much less the time / money involved in that. More of a double standard really consumers want cures and remedies NOW but when one is provided that may not have been tested in studies for 10 years and complications arise their the first to cry LAWSUIT.

The longer drug companies spend testing more money the drug is going to cost and if you know ANYONE on medicare ask them how they get by with their prescription costs.Ive seen so many cases where older adults pay 50-75% of their income on medicine alone......Not defending them in any way just observations from seeing people improve on Vioxx and other highly advertised drugs these days.Theres individual risk with taking pretty much anything from aspirin to flu shots to nasal inhalers just depends on body chemistry and family history.Drug companies could inform patients more but IMO that would be up to the FDA to enforce stricter guidelines for imforming consumers on potential risks and newly discovered risks.

Bottom line if your sick and need to take something your prolly going to take it and if you don't the situation more often than not will continue if not get worse.Out of 2 million people who take drug (a) theres is going to always be a % which encounter complications.

I would still take Vioxx if they would sell it to me. I've been seriously considering a trip to mexico to purchase some Arcoxia (the replacement, not approved in the US). *sigh*

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. The increased cases of heart attack were 14 in 1000 compared with 7 in 1000 after 18 months for the control group. There is nothing showing that there is any higher risk for usage under 18 months.

I took Vioxx and it didn't work at all for me. Though, I was given Bextra as a replacement and it doesn't seem to work either.

I would rather just smoke pot.. cause' we all know that works.

No..i give up. I'm astmhatic and take Advair everyday. Advair is better than anything I've taken before.

It's funny you mention that... I'm on Advair and it's the drug that made me start the thread. It's been more effective than anything I've taken (I've had asthma for 25 years), but I'm just a tad supicious... 😉

You can still get celebrex and bextra, they are basically the same thing as vioxx. I was taking Bextra for a while, but it kinda lost it's effectiveness after a while. I really something however, this pain sucks.

edit: Yes the green stuff works, but we all know you can't really use it the same way. Working on Bextra is possible unlike other things 😀

All Cox-2 inhibitors are not created equal. I'm limited in the pain medications I can take because I'm on coumandin, Vioxx worked better than anything I've ever taken and Celebrex is like taking a sugar pill.
