Do rental companies usually have 4wd

im looking for an awd/4wd to drive to the skiing slopes

im running an aggregate search for vehicles (across hertz, national, enterprise, avis, budget, etc).

they all have "compact suv" and "suv" and "large suv" categories. however, none explicitly say whether the vehicles are 4wd or not.


the prices for SUVs are 2x standard vehicles. if a Ford Escape (for eg) is 2wd, I might as well gowith Pontiac G6 or something.

anyone know? its 11pm and i dont feel like calling these places up
 
Depends on the part of the country you are in. Fleets in the southern states are obviously biased towards more 2wd, versus the northern states where all of the SUVs are ordered with four or awd. If you check on the websites, you can clearly see that it specifies 4wd unless otherwise indicated.

Now if you want a locking diff 4wd, that is a bit more difficult. In general, those are not ordered due to issues customers have with their operation, especially the part time ones (without the auto setting). If you know people, they can get you setup with the good stuff. I always made sure my friends got LR3s and Audi Q7s when they came into town. My favorite were the Cadi XLRs and the twin turbo Audi S4s I swiped from Florida. It surprising the amount of high end stuff rental fleets have that most customers don't get to drive.
 
Enterprise in Idaho has lots of 4WD. I wound up with a quad cab Dodge Dakota 4WD with a "compact" class rental. Your best bet is to call the place you're renting from.

How do you pull off getting the nice cars? I'm taking a business trip in a few weeks and wouldn't mind something nicer than the standard "compact" rental. Dodge Calibers suck. 🙁

How much to rent those luxury SUVs for a day?
 
Here in central NC, Enterprise has 4WD/AWD vehicles.

I have rented Grand Cherokees and all of them were 4X4's.
 
Most in the Rockies will have 4WD. If you intend to use your CC's rental car insurance to cover damage, make sure it covers the vehicle you rent. My CC's damage insurance won't cover pickups or some of the high end SUVs (no Escalade for ironwing).

I've been to the ski slopes dozens of times and grew up in upstate NY driving through some pretty snowy winters and I've NEVER owned a 4WD vehicle in my entire life.

our passes are 9000ft high.

and im from texas

and many other ppl on the road will be from texas. and california.
 
if you go directly to the rental compaines website it is much eaiser to find a 4wd car. I ran into something similar renting a car in vegas for me and a few buddies (driving to utah for a few days and skiing then coming back to vegas to gamble).

I went to hertz's website directly and rented a "GMC Yukon XL or similar - 4WD/AWD Prem Extra Capacity SUV". If you have AAA, use the '0014' CDP code for 15% off. It will cost around 700 bucks for 1 full week rental unlimted mileage and such (702.56 is what I paid)

Yep. Saved my ass when I got stuck in the dunes near Humboldt bay up in Northern California. I saw some vehicles parked up close to the jetty and I decided to park there when my Jeep Liberty rental got stuck in the sand. I realized all the cars up in front were 4x4 trucks. I soon discovered the 4x4 engagement lever and used it and badaboom, I was outta there.

My first trip to Breckenridge my uncle made a big deal that we needed 4WD. All the SUVs at the Denver airport were 4WD, so I rented one of those thru priceline. Was like $400 for 6 days (including underage drivefee). The next 2 times we took the shuttle.

This recent trip, my friend was Platinum Elite at National, so we reserved with him because at all airports he gets to choose his vehicle (cost $190 for 4 days). I also made a reservation at Hertz based on one of their half off coupons..for $100, but it was only for a midsize. After discussion and realizing he could choose any vehicle (so I thought), I cancelled my reservation. Well, the Salt Lake City airport wasn't setup like that for National, he only got a 1 step upgrade.. Couldn't get the Hertz rate. We ended up taking a Pontiac Vibe GT, and did survive, including driving to the slopes each day from hotel. Lesson: don't cancel a good rental car rate.

All of the passes in the Rockies are higher than any of the hills in New England.
It may be 50 in Denver, but at the Divide, it is 20 and snowing. Chain laws are in effect.
The roads will be snow covered and possibly packed. 20+ miles to the ski areas and a 500ft drop with no real shoulder.
