well you have to look at the glaring contradiction as well... are those of us who oppose these people and their religious beliefs just as annoying? I find it hard to believe because everyone talks without mentioning god in every sentence, but when it comes down do an misunderstanding or arguement... are we just as annoying to them as they are to us?

YES they do!!!

I think most people (me included) believe there is some sort of higher power in some way, but I don't like seeing everything attributed to god.

I can't stand it when a pro sports figure thanks god for him winning. How about all the hard work, the coaches, and the little bit of luck it takes to win. I know they thank em all, but when it seem they put the most emphisis on god it drives me nuts. A lot of people believe in god, but not a lot of people have Super Bowl rings. So IMO god is not why they won.

<<Do people who are jerks bother me, religious, non-religious, and atheist alike?>>

<<A resounding yes!!!>>

Isla... I agree with ya on that!!!

I know that I can be annoying and not because I am an atheist... I can find more interesting ways to annoy people... (If I really wanted to)

I have to live through alot of that, my dad being all religious, I used to goto church 3 times a week (Sunday morning & evening, and Wednesday) not to mention all the youth group stuff. Recently I've had a major religious realization, I decided that I didn't believe in anything (athiest if you like labels) Really it was ust an organization of doubts I had already had for a long time.

Problem is I know my parents would rob me of the few freedoms I have if they knew about this so I have to 'play church' once a week, and not be too rebellious the rest of the week. It's not too bad, I've had almost 17 years to get used to it!

So yes, religious people (that includes athiests or anything) or in general anybody who's arogant about their beliefs. Why can't we all just get along? I make love, not war. hehe

I can't stand people who try to convert me.

Anyways - do people like that annoy me?
Perfect example: In my Magic, Religion, and Witchcraft class a girl handed out flyers about some new church on campus the other day. She put one on everybody's seat. Fvck that - put one outside the door, not everybody is interested. Then, today, two girls were talking before class (way too loud and annoying, might I add). Most of their conversation consisted of "Why should you love God? Well, he's God, that's why. That's why you should love him. Simply because he's God." This went on for about 5 minutes. I mean - nothing against conversation, but why can't people have to yell at each other when they sit right next to each other???

So, anyways, that's my rant for today. And yes, sometimes it annoys me when people always put "because of God" or "because God wanted it that way" in a sentence. Other times I just ignore it or stop talking to them...

we don't enforce the fact that we aren't orthodox to them, why should they enforce it on us coming out and puting brochures or papers on our desks and stuff... you can't avoid it, it's on your desk... you just want to crumple it up and toss it at their head.. if you wanted to be a part of it then you would have made the effort to look for it yourself, I'm not saying it's wrong to try to bring people into your religion, it's part of the bible to recruit people into your religion. Talking about it confuses me more... what draws the line as to how people should talk about religion to you? is I guess what I'm getting to.

The only ones that bother me are the ones that try to push it on me or anyone else. I actually like people who are religious, but don't preach to me. It makes them rather nice people. I personally am agnostic, but most if not all of my friends are religious.

On a recent vacation to India, I had met a african american guy sitting next to me praying to god before takeoff. Once airborne I talked to him. He was a cool guy intially. He hailed from a suburb of Los Angles and we got talking. Soon enough he asked me what I was doing, I told him I was on vacation and I was going to join my family back in the US and start a new semester. ... the conversatoin continued.. and he told me that he was part of a missionary group. I said that's cool. Then he started. Here are the excerpts.

Conversation: MB -> Me FD -> the missionary guy

FD -> "Do you know who Jesus Christ is".
MB -> "Yes"
FD -> "Do you know he is the saviour?"
MB -> *thinking: Who will save me now* " No I didnt, what did he save?"
FD -> "Have you read the Bible"
MB -> "Yes the Old Testament & the New Testament"
FD -> "You shouldnt read the bible you should live by it"
MB -> "Isnt reading enough?"
FD -> "What religion do you follow"
MB -> "Classifed Hindu by Indian law (born in India)"
FD -> "Ah so you dont know about all the good that Jesus Christ has done"
MB -> "Yes I do know, saved the people from world hunger like what your doing"
FD -> "You dont understand to me from my childhood days the only person I looked upon is Jesus Christ"." He has shown me the way of why things happen and why things dont"."Like why the sky is blue, why the sun shines, why do we exist, where did we come from".
MB -> "Isnt that what L.Ron Hubbard said?"
FD -> "Not him" - snickers and continues "My life wont be the same if I didnt have Jesus Christ in my heart"
MB -> "Ok that is good for you, I am glad you found someone to believe in."
FD -> "Have you read the Bible?"
MB -> "Yes.. I answered that already" - getting irritated.
FD -> "The bible starts with the words 'In the beginning'"
MB -> "humm.. lets see if history serves me right Jesus Christ comes about in 0000 so anything before that would not exist in your claim"
FD -> "No but In the beginning is how it starts everything starts here"
MB -> "How can you say that.. read other world religions and ancient civilizations, If you say that what happened to the egyptian god 'RA' or the civilization of Harappa and Mohenjadaro, or even Pompeii?"
MB -> "I dont think you should make a bold statement trying to prove a claim of profile when actually there is a claim of fact to prove things that your saying is wrong. Plus every Major religion says this go read them.. it may not be direct as it is but it does say it. I suggest you read them first before making your 'In the beginning' claim"
MB -> "The biggest problem with christianty and Hindiusm is that there is no verifiable records, all the events were transvered before printed or tabulated, look at Buddhism or Jainism they have written history of those periods."
FD -> "Ok we will talk about this later"

*Dinner is served and me look at my watch 2 hrs to go.. yikes*
After dinner I conversated with him again, with the topic getting around again.. finally I said "I need a glass of water".. head back and started to chat with a cute airhostess... then we landed in Madras I disappeared quickly.

Ah.. what an experience..

I dont mind religious differnces or people telling me something about thier religion but I hate people who try to convert or not listen to facts or people who dont know a $hit about other religions."

I am not overly religious, I go to church every now and then, but I have alot of respect for people that are very religious. It's too bad I can't be like that.

I personally am an Agnostic that doesn't believe in God. I am fine with those who deal, just don't like the people who try to force their religion on you. I dislike the Fanatic (and this applies to other topics besides just religion. Any kind of fanatic gets on my nerves). I believe that this quote by Winston Churchill pretty well sums up the fanatic:

"A fanatic is someone who can't change their mind and won't change the subject."

That gets on my nerves. But as long as they aren't like that, religion is fine.

Deeko... why do you have allot of respect for them? not that you shouldn't... but why do you? I can't get angry at missionaries, that's their job to convert people... they're their to get the doors slammed in their faces, it's discouraging for them, but it's their job. I'm not talking about Missionaries... I'm talking about the average joe on the street.

Only when they try to force their beliefs on me. Then it can be really annoying. Just being anything does not bother me.

A very cool and decent guy at work is religious and a deacon in his church. He does not preach to anybody, but everybody respects him and he lives his religion. This is a very good advertisement for his religion.

But the guy he rides to work with walks around with his Bible and this poorly disguised attitude that he is better than the rest of us, and trys to convince everyone to be like him. This guy is an assh*le and a hypocrite and if he realized what a *bad* advertisement he was for his religion, he would shut up.

But who sticks out in my mind? The assh*le, because he is so visible all the time.
This is unfortunate, because everybody thinks: "If I become religious, I'll be an assh*le like him, and I don't want to be like that!"

What's wrong with people sharing what they believe to be the best thing in life?

Why are people so quick to get on the defensive when someone talks to them about a religion not of their own?

I'm not talking about people who go around intentionally talking about their religion to promote it, just using the word of god, I mean, it's not the people that talk about their religion to convert people, that's their job for the church that's different, but it's the people who aren't on missions that act like they are that bother me the most.

People talking about their religion don't bother me. In fact, I work at a local church and talk about religion all the time. It is those with the attitude that the hold the ultimate truth and try to cram it down your thought, and aren't listening to your point of view, that bug me.

I have to say that some of the zealots are rather good at getting to me.

I worked with this guy once who was southern baptist. He used to ask me (a baptized catholic) if I had taken Jesus into my heart to save my soul. I would say that I have and he would continue to interrogate me until I ended the conversation. What bothered me so much about this guy is that when he lived near Lexington, he use to pose as a gay man in bars, hit on a man, ask him over for the night, and then proceded to take him to an alley where a pack of his friends were waiting so they could beat the life out of the guy and leave him for dead. For this reason, whenever someone asks me if I've taken Jesus into my heart, I really stop to examine the source. Most times I really don't care if they truly believe I'm saved, because their salvation is all a lie anyway.

I work with another woman who is always inviting me to come to her bible study group so that God and Jesus can help me to be a better Christian. I always have to tell her that I am perfectly content living with an agnostic point of view and that I don't limit myself to one book to help me make moral decisions.

My #1 pet peeve is the religious nuts that use their religion as an excuse for everything. If they do badly, it is because God meant it that way, not that they didn't try hard enough. If something good is done, God was looking out for someone, not that the person was a quick thinker or that they tried hard. It seems like credit is never being given to the one that truly earned it.

Why would he be?

I think jerks and arrogant pricks annoy me, they can be religious or not. You must realize however that Christianity doesn't go hand in hand with the "no one's truth is any better than anyone's other truth" If that annoys you, I'm sorry. However I'm sure many things in this world annoy many people, religion and lack of religion, being only two of an infinite number.

DonaldDuck82:

in that case, hell would be overflowing with souls because I don't think souls ever come out of hell.... in which case all hell would break loose... therefore if you don't have a personal relationship with Jesus christ you still have a chance of getting into heaven... so I think you are wrong... and you are the only person I think that is wrong in this entire thread.
