I am in an argument with my roommate that Puerto Ricans and Dominican Republicans eat burritos, tacos, etc. He says no they don't, it's not a staple of their cuisine, but I think so.

Isn't that stuff mexican food? Not every spanish ethnicity eats that stuff, at least as far as I know.

I lived in the Dominican Republic for 2 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer and never saw a burrito, taco or enchilada. Yucca, platano and black beans were their staples along with duck, chicken and pork for meat. This is among the middle and lower classes that I lived among.
I knew a few Puerto Ricans who were living there for various reasons and their diets were pretty much the same.

First of all, the smell absolutely kills me. I can't STAND the smell of mexican food. If my GF eats something from Taco Bell, I won't kiss her until she brushes her teeth. And the not eating at Taco Bell thing goes back about 15-16 years or so. My dad was the president of the Elementary school PTA and he went around to the different fast food restaraunts to get coupons for the kids who did well in school.
McDonalds gave like 100 coupons for free hamburgers and fries
Wendys gave 75 coupons for free Frosties and a small fry
Burger King gave I think 80 coupons for burgers or something
Pizza Hut gave 50 coupons for 1 free personal pan pizza
Taco Bell said we ain't givin' you anything
My dad said he'd never eat a Taco Bell...EVER. I pretty much boycotted them along with him
I just ate a microwave burrito with BBQ sauce and ranch dressing dumped on it. I'm not Puerto Rican or Dominican though.

Yeah, I've been to PR several times (just went last month) and the historically native cuisine is similar. Creole/Carribean seafood, pork, chicken, mofongo, black beans, plantains, etc. Good stuff.

it really sounds like you're confusing taco bell with mexican food.
i know the tex mex up north is suck; you shouldn't base your opinions on it
