Do public computers require a special microsoft license?

Were thinking of putting a couple of computers in the student lounge at my university and are wondering if we need any sort of special liscense to do so?

Or can I just install a retail version of Microsoft Windows on it?

It's only going to be one computer per version -- it's not like I am going to buy one retail version of Windows and put it on 10 computers. It will just be one per computer..

Legal?

Seriously, I don't think there's like a "Kiosk Edition" license or anything like that.

Are the computers owned by the university? I am guessing your university has a site license... so why not use it?

You can, but like everyone said they will be screwed up unless you take the preventative measures. Our school has very limited access at the kiosks. Essentially your schedule and email is all you have within the 15min time limit. You can do some pretty cool things if you have the MS server software. I would be very wary of allowing the students access to CD drives or USB drives.

Where do you go to school? We don't have any problems at UT. The computers in the geography lab even let you install programs.

No, actually they won't. This is in a secluded area of campus and the lounge is only available to students living in one particular on-campus apartment complex.

There are only 120 students who have a key that will allow the access to the room and of those right now only about 10 students regularly use the room.

There is a big screen tv, dvd recorder, ping pong table and paddles and the works. Nobody even steals the ping pong balls. Someone recently stole the pool balls but when an email went out the were returned within two days.

This isn't some giant state university -- it's Humboldt State. The students are all too stoned to steal anything.

Eh because then we have to fill out about 100 pages of paperwork and work our way through mounds of red tape when we could just buy a couple cheap computer that would serve the students fine.

I own a computer company now and am offering the computers to the school for half of what Dell wants. Yeah I am losing money but it's worth it to get my name out there ;)

Yeah, at my university, USB drives are a requirement for some courses. Everybody has to have one, since all the machines are reghosted nightly and there are no network drives. It works out well.

Nah I am just going to reformat the drives every month and install everything fresh.
