on wifi, they do pull an IP from the DHCP server on the router

when you say IP of the proxy of the cell provider, can you elaborate?
so they DO get an IP address, and it's assigned from the cell provider.

i think my confusion is in your use of 'of'. perhaps you mean 'off'.

Yes, 3G and EDGE phones accessing the internet have an IP address.

You can see the phone's IP address on most phones by accessing the phone's Field Test Mode. On a lot of Nokia's and the iPhone, the Field Test Mode is *3001#12345#*. You can Google the Field Test Mode code for your phone. On some phones, Field Test requires running a engineering firmware release instead of the production version (a lot of Motorola are like this).

Yes, comcast voice is still a voip service.

That would be my guess, but I've never been able to play with the modem to be sure. If I remember, I'll check my friend's modem when I'm in NC next month. Different company, but same tech.
