Do people still buy inkjet printers?

What's the alternative? A laser printer is not that cost-effective if you don't print often, isn't it?

I think they are because the toner doesn't really go bad like ink carts do. They can be had fairly inexpensively also, so it makes sense to buy them. That's what I'll probably get for my next printer.

if she only printed black and white a laser would be worth the initial cost, she'd probably never go through the original ink cartridge

my dad has an HP 2600n color laser printer, thing is also a bitch with like 5 ink cartridges

our color laser printer at the lab = $400 per month cost on toner cartridges. ...and I would not call our use "above normal" for our lab.

that being said, yes...I absolutely still prefer inkjet.

also, the national foundation for weights and measures, or whatever they are called, are currently discussing some standardized measurement to enforce on ink cartridge manufacturers. Interesting development as it could lead to much, much cheaper cartridges in teh future. (Once people can start comparing what they are getting per cartridge from each manufacturer, we can assume more competitive prices will start appearing)

Kodak inkjets are more expensive initially but the ink is very cheap......... only real drawback is that to get proper photos you have to use kodak paper.

Cheers,
Aquaman

We've got a HP2600N at work and it goes through the toner way too fast. There is a hidden setting override that allows you to print until the toners are bone dry. Without the setting, you can print only until HP thinks it's time to get new cartridges.

We've essentially gone back to printing B&W on our HP5000N laserjet as much as possible. Now that's a workhorse --- a single $30 toner lasts 6 months.

ehh, laser isn't expensive. Got a samsung CLP-300 on sale for $70 before they came out with the new model. Drum is rated for 20k pages, and toner is $30 on ebay for a 4 color set or $10 each. 2k pages black, or 1k pages for CYM

In the end, the paper costs the same as the ink+printer. Of course, you won't be printing any pretty pictures.

applies.

I've had a Brother HL2040 for 3 and a half years, printed hundreds and hundreds of pages and have yet to run out of the original toner cartridge. Said it was low and wouldn't let me print anymore, so I taped over the holes it uses to check its level, and it's still going strong a semester later.

I bought a laser printer a couple years ago, ran out of toner and to get more was almost $100.

Woah - bought the wrong laser printer? I bought a Brother Laser Printer for $45. Toner is about $30 but gets about 3000 pages worth of black and white

Thats the one I have and did the same thing to the toner. Heh. Great printer!

So true. The #1 absolute worst thing about Windows is that network printing is impossible. Google search for "vista print spooler"

My HP Laserjet 1012 has had the same toner cartridge for about 2 years now and it still prints great.

Before that I had an Epson ink printer that stopped working after less than a year because the stupid ink dries inside the nozzle and it's impossible to clean it.
I bought an HP printer/scanner just to photocopy things, and then I found out the ink for it is $40 just for the black, so now I scan things and print them on the laser printer.

It was a Canon, don't remember what model #. I didn't get new toner for it. I just use the printers on campus now.

edit: nevermind, it was a Samsung like GTaudiophile, but I think it was a 2510

Laser all the way. I'm surprised they still make inkjets / bubblejets (think they're the same, or are they different?)

inkjet cartridges last a few weeks at most if not used, laserjets can last YEARS if more. Color lasers are also more consistent in quality. ink jets will print maybe 5 high quality prints then it goes downhill from there until the whole head/cartridge assembly is replaced and that will run you almost 100 bucks. Not worth it. Get her a color laser, it will have a bigger upfront cost but very low future cost to run. Avoid the HPs, their drivers are crap, especially the 3600 series. Crashes our print server all the time. :/

My ink only costs $25 for a black HP cartridge. Granted, I go through probably one every 2 months but all the laser printers I looked at would have a higher cost of ownership over a few years.

I'm done with inkjet crap. I love my Samsung ML-2510, still using the toner it came with, and it just works perfectly.
