I work in HR and also have worked for many companies who got taken over by others, so I've seen plenty of people getting fired.

RIF is not the same as getting fired.

Well, of cource it's not, but I thought that the OP meant layoffs also

I'm pretty sure he's talking about "YOU'RE FIRED" type of termination which is indeed rare in corporate environments. Even just termination due to performance is a pain in the ass.

In my lifetime i've seen 2 people get fired and it was salespeople who weren't selling. and they got a month severance.

I see people get fired quite often for firable offenses, but never for under-performing. They tend to give demotions here instead for firings. Although some people voluntarily leave rather than take the pay cut. I don't think that counts though.

I've seen entire departments shut down and eliminated due to the incompetence of management but said management never lost their jobs just the people working in those departments due to RIF, "streamlining, consolidation, improvement in efficiency."

I have seen the Peter Principle in full force. The worst part of corporate society is even when you beat them about the head and shoulders with written documentation they maintain it is open to interpretation. 'We may be passing the 49th floor towards the ground but we're falling much slower than last year!'
