LOL :) There must be 30 different accents here in Britain, I have no idea how she could think that when you only have to drive a couple of hours to find people speaking a completely different way.

As a Southerner, let me assure you that there is no manner of speech more vile than that which escapes the New England mouth.

I know Connecticut does not have an accent. we prounounce words correctly annunciating each letter phoenetically as it was meant to be said without dropping syllables or adding drawls. It is quite perfect english.

In summary do not clump the north eastern states all together. Massholes, NYC'ers long islanders and connecticutians all sound much different.

How do you pronounce Connecticut?
Connect-ee-cut or Connet- ee-cut?

Midwesterners generally seem to have, as a whole, a more neutral accent than most people I've met...but there are quite a few who have this weird little pronunciation hitch with the "a" sound in words like bag or back.

As far as southern/northern (i.e. NY/NJ/Mass) accents go, it's really going to vary depending on where you are. Southerners aren't used to northern accents, so some of them find it interesting, and vice-versa. As a whole, though, I'd say that at least in my personal experience, more men find a slight southern rather than a slight northern accent attractive in a woman.

As a northerner, let me assure you that there is no manner of speech more vile than that which escapes the Southern mouth. That ugly drawl ruins the language.

The New York Times defines it as the Tri-State area.

Here in North Dakota we have the most neutral accent of anywhere in the country. But I don't really care what someone sounds like as long as I can understand them.

I like how people from Texas speak.

Is a New York accent supposed to be like Robert De Niro? That works great too.

But a good British accent is impossible to beat. Tony Blair, Michael Caine, Kate Winslet....man, I wish I could talk like that.

I can't say I've ever met anyone from Connecticut, so I've got nothing against y'all. If you can give me a better geographic term that encompasses Massachussetts, NY, and Jersey then I'll use it instead of "New England".

jersey and new york are not part of new england silly. new england is CT, MA, RI, NH, VT and ME
Well I am Southern. I'm aware of that definition, but we generally include the "middle colonies" when making that reference. (Sort of like how the rest of the world calls all Americanas "Yankees".) Pretty much everything above Maryland is New England to me.

Edit: Also, I'm beginnng to dislike Connecticutians now :)

While we're engaging in stereotypes here, you sound like a dumb Southern redneck.

Not true.

Have you seen the movie Fargo? You guys sound like that, but not anywhere near as extreme. What is that, a "Scandinavian accent?"

And I'm sorry, I fvcking hate the movie Fargo too (the accents are EXTREME), but it was the only thing I could think of to describe how you guys sound.

Just lettin' you know, man....

(BTW...I'm from South Dakota :))

...but in general, the midwestern "accent" IS considered to be the most neutral.

European accents though?, yes.

that goes for any foriegner. Foriegner's are always loud, anywhere.

Americans (or at least Texans) seem to be exceptionally so.

No, in my experience an American accent is just a signal that you want to discuss the evils of US foreign policy.
I don't know who made me the official US ambassador to your nightclub, but I QUIT!:|

im from New Zealand (dont get offended, i mean no disrespect) but the American accent is one of the most annoying there is. Ive seen on TV some chicks (from the south i think) and they have that different sounding accent, which is kinda sexy but the twangy full on american accent gives most non-us people a headache.

Do NOT equate a Southern accent with "full on American";)

every trip down south I say two words in a bar and two min. later I'm approached numerous times by amazing southern women.

sorry if that doesnt work for you up here.
I've never been to the Northeast, but I've met more than a few transplants. It didn't bother me at first, but I've come to hate it when it's a very strong accent. Since I'm not an amazing southern woman, I'm sure you won't mind.
And yes, I type "y'all". If you can think of a more concise way to address a group in the second-person please enlighten me.
You all? perhaps

Very few people actually have that accent here, probably five percent or less, and they are all older people. You have to travel into northern canada to find an accent which even approaches that portrayed in the movie Fargo.
