Well, do they? Some of the roads here in Canton have a posted speed limit of 50. People go 35. US-12 runs by near to me, speed limit, 55. I'm lucky if I can reach 50 most of the time. No one turns left except for when its completely clear, people go straight through the intersection in the right turn only lane to avoid having to stop for these people who are turning left but don't, and I always have to get behind some guy driving 50 down I-275(70 mph speed limit) with his left turn signal on! ARRRRRRRRRGH!
</RANT>

Does this happen anywhere else?! I noticed when I went to Florida for vacation this year that it was nothing like this!

The worst drivers IN THE WORLD all commute from Chapel Hole, NC into the Research Triangle Park every morning.

That the death toll is not measured in the thousands can only be due to divine intervention.

Columbus is worse!! People go 65 in a 35, weave in and out of traffic dangerously just to get ONE car ahead. If there are a line of cars waiting to make a left hand turn, the light will turn yellow and no one will go through, then 4 will go on the red. Or, the light will turn red and someone who is like 10 car lengths back (in an empty lane) will decide they'd rather not stop and run right through the light. People will go striaght through a right turn only lane if that means getting ahead of the straight going traffic. Don't GET me started on the jerks who drive here!

Succotash...everybody in Canton drives really slowly because all of you rich folks don't want to mess up your nice cars. :p

Michigan, in general, is known for having (in addition to the worst roads) some of the most aggressive, maniacal drivers. Especially when you consider that we don't have the same kind of insane traffic as places like LA. We tend to drive like maniacs, just for the hell of it...not sure why that is. All of my friends who grew up in Ohio are amazed at themselves when they go back & visit family. They find themselves driving 20mph faster, & far more aggressive than theur Ohio counterparts on the road.

For the most part it's not bad here...It's just in the morning time...when you're tired...and late for work...and just spilled something on yourself...and you're sitting in traffic, that's when you notice what assholes other drivers are ;)

SS:

Florida drivers are the worst for several reasons. We have quite a few immigrants who are unlicensed, but drive anyway. My lawyer estimates that about 30% of the drivers are uninsured. Road rage and excessive speeding abound. Florida is one of the drug capitals of the world, so at any given time quite a few drivers are totally blotto from drugs. Florida is a major party state, so at any given time quite a few drivers are totally blotto. Although the vast majority of the retired people here drive the speed limit and respect others, a few old folks shouldn't be driving after the doctor took out both eyes, both arms, and both legs. Then we have males under 50, who drive like they are in the terminal stages of lung cancer and want to get it over with quickly. Ditto for females under the age of 30.

A local police officer told me that instead of a radar trap behind my house he's just going to mail one ticket a month to ALL the homeowners, including the judge and the highway patrol officer. No one obeys the speed limit.

In my view the maximum speed limit should be 40 mph. One DUI and you go to jail for six months and lose your license. One incident of road rage and you lose your license for 5 years. Get the people off the road who don't appreciate the PRIVILEGE of driving. Especially speeders.

And, when I hear people complain that the can't go FAST enough, I cringe.

Don't even get me started on people who think their car is their office, restaurant, bedroom, toilet, and argumentarium. Cell phones don't belong in cars, even if they are hands free. (Actually, I hate cell phones. I hope every one of those boogers has circuit failure NOW.)

I know I am the only person in this country, and possibly the world who doesn't speed, uses a turn signal, doesn't have a cell phone, isn't getting a ****job on the way to or from work, etc.

In short, none of you should be driving, I'm sure. :p

chess9, i'll definitely put up the vote for fl drivers! not only do we have a ton of immigrants and uninsured people, but my hometown is orlando - have u all ever seen a few million tourists all driving in a small area? not a one of them has any idea where they are going? left hand turns from a right lane on a road that's 6 lanes wide in either direction, u turns across medians, doing 70 on roads that are 40 cuz they think disney might not be there when they get to it...
and try college towns for almost as bad driving....come hit us 90 in tallahassee on a fri nite and tell me u've seen worse

AMEN chess9 & farbio...

I too live in Florida. I could probably write page after page about some of the pi$$ poor driving I've seen here. The folks from Canton, Columbus, Maryland, etc. etc. haven't considered the fact that Florida is where many of them come to on vacation.

Where I live there is a small informal group called FLAP (Florida League Against Progress). The print anti-tourist bumper-stickers. My favorite so far is:

Happiness is a New Yorker headed north on I-95 with a Canadian under each arm...

That's another thing I hate -- cell phones. In MI, they are working on a law that makles it illegal to use a cell phone and drive at the same time. A 40 MPH speed limit is ridiculous. It would take forever for people like me to get anywhere (I put 40,000 miles on my car in less than a year and a half, and my father-in-law drives at least an hour to work and an hour back every day). That would mean I'd spend 1000 hours of my life out of 13140 hours driving, and that's only figuring that I can drive through residential areas at that speed. Almost 10% of my life driving. With 1/3 of it sleeping, that only leaves me with 57% of my life, of which 23% is spent at work, leaving 34%. Nay, I think the speed limit should be raised. When I'm driving down the expressway on a nice sunny day with no one around me, how in the world can I be endangering anyone by going 80 instead of 70?

SS: You can endanger yourself. :) But, we aren't going to agree on the speed limit. The solution in my view is to remove half the drivers from the highways. At least half of them shouldn't be there. That would speed things up.

Guys from Florida: Oh, yeah, how could I forget the tourists? You gotta love 'em, though. They pay a lot of tax money. We have no income tax in Florida, for those who don't know. That's one reason so many pro athletes live here.

Ok, its a deal. Besides, when the road's open like that, I don't call it speeding, I call it "keeping up with the flow of traffic."

I agree with the Ohio drivers.

In Columbus, EVERYONE has their damn 3rd brakelight out. We have the worst drivers.. and I'm not talking like agressive and fast and stuff, I'm talking about STUPID as in morons. Just about every car I see has a bump on the back or side which says "Hey, I like to stop instantly on the freeway for NO reason at all!"

I drove downtown Cleveland everday for High School and it was nothing compared to the much shorter distance I have to drive downtown for Columbus. Luckily I'm peaceful or I would have killed many people already.

Don't even get me started on how slow some of these btards drive on backroads.

Greenville SC drivers are horrid. Everybody runs lights (I've had to wait til my light was yellow again before I could go). Heck, a cop ran a red light this morning (I had a green and was just starting to go when he drove by w/o his lights/siren on :p).

It's bad enough that everybody (myself included) goes way over the speed limit. I've gone through speed traps at over 90mph in a 70 zone without getting pulled over. What do you have to do around here to get a ticket?!

Oh wait! Did I mention the people who stop beside the yield sign in the ACCELERATION lane and crane their necks out the driver's side window to to see if anyone is coming? Or how bout the folks that stop on the interstate to let in the idiots who are stopped on the onramp?

I'm not even going to start on the subject of rubberneckers until I've had my latest dose of anti-stress medicine...:|

Pittsburgh city drivers are pretty bad.

They seem to have a rule that, in traffic, three cars are allowed to race through the intersection after the light turns red.

At an intersection with no turning arrow, when the light turns green the driver turning left takes off like a rocket and turns first. It's kind of handy here, since everyone expects it, but it's pretty bad when those drivers leave the city. I grew up about 100 miles to the north, and I remember 3 accidents (1 fatal) caused by Pittsburgh drivers attempting this manuever in Erie.

They have another rule that, again only in traffic, you may not have more than 5 feet between your car and the one in front of you. I can't count the number of times I've watched people pull right into an intersection and completely block it when the traffic in front of them stops.

The "Pittsburgh Lane-Change": Position the front corner of your car in front of a car in the lane you wish to move to. His only choice is to hit you or let you in.

Are we talking highway driving or city streets? Cause I'm sure as hell not going to do 55 in a 35 on a city street all cause Mr. Hot Rod wants to go faster! Speed limits (like it or not) are there for a reason. Highways are a little different because you don't have people pulling out of driveways, parking lots, etc. In my opinion, getting to work 5 minutes faster isn't worth a speeding ticket.

In Florida it is the worst. Everyone else who has seen terrible drivers in their home state: take those drivers and all of their bad habits, and put them in a situation where they wander around lost in an unfamiliar car, trying to drive and read a fscking roadmap at the same time.

Combine that with the old farts driving 10 MPH, the coked up ba$stards driving 100 MPH, and the South Americans driving on the wrong side of the road, and you have chaos on a grand scale. In my last job, I drove more than 50,000 miles per year, all of it in-state...and I could post pages and pages of horror stories about the drivers down here.

Been to LA: Not as bad.
Been to NYC: Not as bad.
Lived in OH: Not as bad.
