Do people crave what their body needs?

Aside from the high sugar cravings, when people crave things like chicken does that sometimes mean their body needs protein? Is there some sort of a connection between the cravings and what nutrients you lack?

I think it would make sense, though. I don't know. I'm not trying to explain pregnant chicks but gaining a taste for random foods no matter how gross of a combination might mean something? I dont know.

People who eat very little iron in their diets are known to sometimes crave red meat. I have a friend that's not technically a vegetarian but eats mostly vegetables. Every now and then he has a beef craving, and at the same time he's usually showing signs of iron deficiency (fatigue when generally he's full of energy).

It's also common for other cravings to occur when a nutrition deficiency is present. Have you ever eaten the same thing for several days in a row and gotten tired of it? There's a few reasons for that. Naturally you're getting bored of the same flavor, but let's say you're adding different spices to change the taste; you'll still grow tired of the particular food and seek out something else. This is a sign of nutrition deficiency; perhaps you lack vitamin C and crave some delicious fruit (although so many things have Vitamin C in them that this seems an unlikely scenario).

Protein is in most dishes, but I suppose you'd crave something high in protein (chicken, beans, etc.) if you were eating nothing but lettuce for a long time.

I think there's probably a trend but not a rule.

No nothing set in stone. But even with sugar, we train our bodies over the years to expect a certain level of a sugar intake and without it we crave it. I'm guessing our daily routine requires a certain amount of differnt types of nutrients we have taught our body to use would cause the same cravings.

Yes, but you can't make a general rule of it. Just because the body talks doesn't mean the mind listens.

i read a story of a kid how compulsively ate extremely salty foods, and people thought that he had a mental disorder about it. After he died in an metal health facility of some sort not long after going ig, it was realized that he had a problem stroring salts of some such crap and needed to eat that much salt to actually stay alive.

I crave better grammar and spelling when I read this.

I think it's mental, not physical. Given a choice, I will eat meat at every meal. Steak, sausage, porkchops, burgers, chicken... doesn't matter. But I'm sure my body isn't lacking any nutrient in meat.

i have exhibited strong cravings for water, salt, sugar, meat, fat and even fiber.
i found immediate satisfaction and relief (from headache, lethargy, constipation, dehydration) by
water- drinking water (no sweet stuff added)
salt- slim jim, pickles, chips
sugar- soda, but the best satisfaction comes from juice like cranberry juice
meat- burger, chicken, etc
fiber- wheaties, whole grain bread
fat(almost forgot)- ice cream, shakes, burger, fries

i don't eat a lot of food during the day, but when I crave one of these items and go without, i generally start feeling pretty lousy
