do people actually read posts or do the just read first couple ones and then reply

Usually read most but not all of a thread. I read enough to get the gist of the conversation and leave any useful nuggets I can.

if somebody says something stupid i hit reply right away and don't wait till the end of the post. but by that time the person has usually already been flamed 18 times so my post ends up repeating what others had said. other than that i read the whole thing.

Depends on the topic and how long the thread is. If I am interested I will read it all. But with this thread for instance, I just replied.
