Do NOT sell items on the Amazon Marketplace *Update 11/23*

The Amazon Marketplace has absolutely no seller protection at all. I sold a book to someone who decided that they no longer wanted it after it had been shipped. She emailed me to state that she did not want the book anymore and would be sending it back as soon as she received it, and I replied that I did not accept returns due to changing her mind. According to the Amazon Marketplace rules, that is not listed as a valid reason for a return.

Anyway, she filed a claim against me that I sent her the 'wrong book' and I defended myself and fowarded her email to Amazon to show what really happened. About a month goes by, and Amazon finally makes a decision in her favor with absolutely no reasoning at all. Not only that, they keep their commission fee (which is over 20%), and she never returned the book. Meanwhile Amazon basically says too bad. What the hell?

Cliffs:
- Sold book on Amazon
- Seller lied and said it was wrong book
- Amazon gives her money back
- Amazon keeps commission fee
- Seller never gives book back
- Amazon says fvck you

Update 11/16
I received a response back from Amazon stating that I did not respond to the claim within 5 business days so I automatically lost the case. This is obviously wrong because I responded the exact same day they notified me of the claim, and my response was posted in my seller account claims area. They also said that since I lost, the buyer has every right to keep my book (WTF?) and that I am responsible for the costs since it is up to their sole discretion.

Update 11/23/05 - Victory

Here is the latest email I received:

"We appreciate your response to our request for more information. I have reviewed this claim and found that you responded with all the information we requested in a timely manner. I have changed the claim so you are not held responsible, so please consider this claim closed in your favor. I apologize for the error and any inconvenience you may have experienced with this transaction.

Thank you for participating in Amazon.com."

Looks like I win..after a PITA.

take amazon to small claims court, they won't show, and you'll win by default. Isn't that the way it works?

Dang, 20% is high! Do they take 20% of the shipping charge too?

Sorry you had a bad experience, I love buying from Amazon Marketplace... great deals on books. I've only had one dispute, and that guy ripped off about 60 people so they refunded the money with no problems.

I sold the book for 24 bucks and Amazon charged a commission of 5.81. Then they give you 2 bucks towards shipping (whoopty) but pass that cost to the buyer anyway.

File a complaint with the BBB, get a hold of one of the higher ups. I'm interested in reading the emails if you care to post them.

I've done tons of transactions as a buyer on the Amazon marketplace. Have yet to have a negative experience. I don't buy from new sellers though. I tried selling a book once, but it didn't sell, so I removed it.

I think its time to start spamming her email address with Pr0n stuff. Sign her up for everything.

I had a problem just like that buying a textbook. I will never use them again.

They charge the buyer something like $2.50, but give the seller less than $2 (for CDs - the amount for books is different). So yes, they're making a profit on the shipping too.

I'd consider it but she lives on the other side of the country. A plane ticket is much more than the book was worth. My goal for now is to make sure I take up enough time from Amazon's customer service and having them respond to my BBB complaints to cost them the amount they shafted me for.

You are not going to get the class easily for the most part.

However; in the early 90's I showed up at a door in my college town with someone that sold them something they got on COD without the mailman collecting.

No police involved. It was $1500. He gathered it up.

I ordered something from Amazon Marketplace back on the 24th of October. The original shipping date was within a day or two, as far as I can tell they still haven't shipped it. The "Delivery Estimate" was originally November 1st. Now it's November 1st through the 15th, and everyday I login it expands by another day. I emailed the seller, no response.

So yeah, Amazon Marketplace has a lot of issues.
