Cross-posted to software forum as well...i think everyone who has used this software needs to know this. I certainly won't be buying it this year. Ripped from Techbargains.

Some info from newsgroups: "Also, everyone should be aware that TurboTax this year has started using a copy protection mechanism called C-DILLA. It requires an activation that locks it to the computer you first install it on. You cannot uninstall it and reinstall it on a different computer. Make sure you don't buy a new computer after installing it on your old computer - you won't be able to use TT on the new computer if you do. I presume that Intuit will provide some mechanism for overriding this if you call in and wade through tech support, but to do so will surely require a good chunk of time spent on the phone. In addition, the C-DILLA program remains installed and resident on your computer even when you are not using TurboTax, and even *after* you uninstall TT. It uses up approximately 1MB of ram and 4 threads - About 1.5% of a 64MB machine's system resources. Not a lot of by todays standards, but still a significant amount considering that when TT is not running (or is uninstalled), it is completely unneccessary. Also, just imagine if every vendor starts implementing a similiar mechanism, with each one taking up another 1MB of ram. There are also rumors on the internet that CDILLA may also be performing some spyware type activities."

My wife and I have been using TurboTax since it came out and online filing, this is so disturbing you cannot know how much so. We already bought this year's but I did not unwrap the box or install it yet.

Damn, all this Corp BS is way out of hand. We the people should be suing with our own version of a DMCA against this Tyranny. What is going on here is worse than what the Corporations and RIAA acuse the people of doing. I was prosecuted for downloading a free inoculous screensaver and these Corporations INSTALL spyware and monitoring crap without authorization. Where are the Lawyers for the people here? 2003 is here and it's high time we organize, revolt and strike back!!! :| :disgust: :|

I personally plan on going to their on-line live support feature and asking many, many questions about this...as frequently as possible ;).

Will Taxcut import last year's Turbotax information properly? I was willing to take "product activation" in the new Turbotax release, but it appears the actual implementation is way more invasive than just a GUID-based registration.

This is HUGE if they really did put this spyware in there. This affects millions of people in the U.S. Let's keep an eye on this and it may warrant a sticky in the near future as we are entering the Tax time for this year right now. Major Media has not picked up on this yet but I suspect it will very shortly.

Be vigilant everybody, we are all in this together!

exactly... all that will happen is that the support people go to their manager to ask how to reply, manager gives them some BS line to recite that doesn't really give a definitive answer or is just a flat out denial, and they'll just give you that response every time.

Well, I'm going to ask them how to remove this program. And won't stop bugging them until they give me an answer that works.

Ok, i get it. Just a little irrational thinking there. I'm just THAT pissed off. ANyway, everyone here should at least repost this to all their favorite forums. We need to make sure that the word gets out.

BTW, can somebody with this year's turbo tax confirm this?

I got it on mine. there is a c_dilla folder on it, couple things in the registry, and a process I think is related called CDAC11BA.EXE taking up 912K of mem.

Edit, I don't know if that program is legit or not it's in my system32\drivers directory

Grrr... :|

And here I was, all fat and happy because TT was "nice" enough to send me a copy this year that I could activate online. I guess it's just one more coaster, now.

I think it might be time for nice class-action lawsuit against all these spyware/adware/CRAPware companies. Just think of how much time people spend trying to uninstall this crap. Multipy that by a couple million computer users and give them $1 for every hour they've spent, and it adds up.

Forget the "class action lawsuit" talk. Spread the word and BOYCOTT their product - there ARE good 'tax' alternatives. That'll let TubboTax know how we feel and hurt them where it hurts most - their pocketbook.

I have heard rumors of C-DILLA screwing up CD-RW drives and other things, but haven't confirmed them. It would not suprise me, however, to find out that these reports are true. FWIW, these spywares are not uncommon with very expensive software: 3dsmax (uses C-DILLA) and Maya (uses FlexLM) are two examples.

I definitely don't agree with the basic notion of treating all customers like potential theives (guilty until proven innocent).

what are the alternatives to using TurboTax (besides filing manually and hiring an accountant)?
