Do name brands in memory really make a difference

How noticeable is the difference in different brands of memory?
Im considering getting OCZ after all the talk about it from my buddies...but I'd like to know if the price is justifiable?
 
There really isn't too much of a difference. The thing you're paying for is the lower timings usually. Timings don't really play that much of a role in the overall performance. If you're big into tweaking every bit of performance out of your computer without any regard to cost, then go with the OCZ.

When I buy memory I buy whatever's cheapest and comes with a lifetime warranty.
 
you cant notice the difference between corsair vs and ocz vs high performance ram idk i have an a64 so no point.
 
As long as the chips are the same, there is really almost no difference. Of course, some name brands will use better PCBs, which might improve overclocking potential a little bit.
 
if you are looking for DDR (not DDR2), anything in 512 that is Samsung TCCD(not UCCC, TCC5,4 CCCC, etc). Patriot XBLK is the cheapest TCCD in 2x512 for $155. If you are interested in 2x1gig Micron 5B-D chip by Crucial gives you best overclocking but cost a lot. Next is Patriot w/ infineon CE-5 chip or the LL serries give you good overclocking and about $225 for 2x1gig. check this Link for 1 gig stick. Brand names sometimes will fool you, thu. OCZ decided to bring back rev 1 TCCD after changing to TCC5 made many p...sd off. So name brand does not necessarily means quality. Basically know who makes the chip (not manuf. of the mem. stick, but the chip maker that manuf. buys from) and what chip is better.
 
the reason i like ocz, followed by mushkin is because of their warranties and how they take care of them. i will pay an extra $20/GB if the warranty is taken care like ocz and mushkin take care of their business. as far as timing, i wouldn't worry about it like other stated unless you are into hardcore o/c
 
It REALLY depends on what you're doing.

Gaming, you wont see more than 2fps diff. Spend that extra $100 on a better vid card.

If you're video encoding, Low latency is very very key. Anything that uses 500+MB of ram then yeah, its important 🙂
 
hacp - pcb's?

im considering buying some value ram (kingston adding another 512) or just trying something like corsair's entry level stuff...but im guessing it won't make a huge difference anyways
 
pcbs are the things that the chips sit on. The green things. The chips are the black things. 🙂

same. i was using generic ram from fry's and kept getting system crashes. initially i attributed it to my use of win98se, but then i decided to run memtest and got 600 errors in the first 5 mins.

no problems now using kingston value ram.

this contradicts your fist statemnt as most newer games will take more than 500MB of ram, please explain
