Do my speakers need to be at ear-level?

I am getting some Logitec z540s and I am thinking about how I will set them up.

Right now, my head is 1.5 feet from the top of my desk, where I usually set the speakers. But, is it better to have them at ear-level? Does it make it a difference in the sound?

As long as the sat's are in the general direction of your ear they should be fine

You should try to place all 4 speakers (in the case of the 540) at the same height... I remember reading somewhere that for home theater sats they should be 1 ft. above ear level... but that might also be my mind betraying me. if you're wondering how to place the speakers in relation to each other, visit http://www4.tomshardware.com/video/20030108/speaker-01.html, they have a good diagram of placement (and also not a bad review of some systems).
