Do most modern switches connect easily to other switches

I'm looking at getting a 24 port switch that at some point may need to be connected to the rest of our network. In this case, how would I connect the two switches? They'll be different physical locations.

Correct. I just encountered that recently with a Dell 24port Gigabit switch at work - pretty nifty feature really. Although I'm still going to keep a cross-over cable in my bag of tricks, as well as a cross-over adapter I found that plugs on the end of a regular LAN cable for a quick-change. 🙂

You can have problems if you uplink to a cisco cat using portfast with certain switches/catos versions

The auto sensing MDI feature is built into gigabit ethernet.

As to if a 10/100 switch, totally depends on the switch and many don't.

More often than not they are. Even the 15 dollar cheapies you buy these days are going to be Auto MDI most of the time.
