Do most games support widescreen?

I maybe into buying a new lcd monitor mainly for gaming.

Do most games support widescreen or is normal aspect ratio still best in games?

A lot of the games coming today support widescreen, STALKER and Oblivion for example. Some older games do, most dont. Check out WSGF, they have hacks for games that dont support WS to enable it. That site has a lot of good information about monitors too.

Yeah, older games where there are no hacks available or where you cant even change the resolution, like Starcraft or Diablo, they look just fine stretched out on my 24".

IIRC, native widescreen support is a requirement to obtain the "games for Windows" logo, so I would imagine that widescreen is going to be native for most games coming out in the future.

Widescreens keep getting more popular, hopefully more game makers will get the hint.

I just use 1:1 pixel mapping and select 1600x1200 for games that dont support WS (1920x1200 LCD).

What size widescreen monitor is 1920 x 1200?

What size normal monitor is 1600 x 1200?

Inches, that is.

A 24" widescreen is typically 1920x1200
A 20" normal monitor is 1600x1200

I just upgraded my 20" dell to a 24" wide dell and I LOVE it.

i agree, it doesn't look bad at all... But a lot of newer games support it anyway.

Thats EA, not DICE. EA considers WS aspects 'cheating' Crackheads.

Well, at least the engine supports it with a shortcut hack. The menus are still stretched but you get a correct aspect ratio and true wide screen (minus the HUD).

Now, there are still some new PC games that dont do widescreen at all. Need for speed Carbon doesnt do widescreen, it just stretches. (And looks terrible).

yea it sucks, and they wont. im in that boat. we run the worlds #1 2142 server and the worlds #2 bf2 server (im *FMJ*Power) and i have been having to use the shortcut command line from day 1. its a big debate but for some reason allot of people do believe that wide screen is an unfair advantage. i know CS uses wide screen and for those not using wide screen it adds the black bars and people dont seem to have a problem with that, i cant see why EA wont do the same.

I don't see how it's possible to define "fair" hardware for games.

Is it "fair" that some people have SLI setups and can run a higher resolution and thus see things clearer? Is it "fair" that some people can afford a Killer NIC and have slightly better performance than those who use an onboard NIC? Is it "fair" that someone who can spend $100 on a 2000dpi laser mouse will get better response and tracking than someone who uses a $20 optical mouse? Is it fair that a 16 year old gamer has better reflexes than a 30 year old gamer?

I would have to tell EA, "Just make your games come with a widescreen option. There are too many other variables you have absolutely no control over".

Hehe, their whole "fair" argument is BS. I dont know what it is about my setup, but in BF2 when I am far enough away certain objects dont show up, like boxes. So if Im say 150M away sniping, when I zoom in I will see this box, but when I zoom out I wont see the box, but I will see the enemy standing behind it because the box is nolonger there, haha. If they want to talk about "fair" then need to fix stuff like that.

What about 22" Monitors with 1680x1050 Pixels. (That is 16:10 Aspect ratio) Those are being the tip of the day lately (cheap hehe) And im looking to buy one.

I cannot give that resolution any game. Neither Counterstrike (Steam) as an above poster said that Steam games work. Theres just the usual resolutions 4:3 mostly, as in any other game.
For the Desktop i can also only choose the common resolutions. Could i probably manually force a resolution with the Nvidia tools? My card is fairly new a 7800gt.
Ive been into a shop latly to watch some 22" monitors that displayed the desktop or screensavers thereof, and all were streched. So im confused... is that the next cool thing to have strechy pictures? Or do you that bought those monitors fix this problem easily?

The correct aspect ratio for the desktop is more important for me, as i dont want distortion in grafic design.

While im here, id also like to ask you. Do those 22" LCD monitors also work with common resolutions 1024x768, 1600x1200, 1280x1024, 640x480 etc? Those would appear streched right?
thanks

Theres something wrong with your drivers, as I know for a fact that all Source games suport 4:3, 16:10, and 16:9. I have used 16:10 with my LCD on a variety of video cards. (X850XT, 6800, Geforce2MX, Radeon 9500).

BF didnt have it before the EA buyout. Either way, thinking that having WS is cheating is really ignorant.

Also, the BF engines do not give you "true wide screen". You get no more game to your left or right. It doesnt stretch it, but its not giving you real WS either.

Do you probably mean monitor drivers? As i dont have a widescreen monitor yet i have no option as to speculate if it will work or not.
My grafic card drivers are fairly new.
Anyway the reply made me more confident

Widescreen does give an unfair advantage over standard in certain game engines because the engine shows a much wider FOV. The majority of FPS games show 90 degrees, 45 to the left, and 45 to the right of the players center view. To keep everything looking normal, most widescreen engines show a larger fov, usually something like 120 degrees, so a 33% increase in field of view.

I have a 22" LG226WT and a 7900 GT KO video card. Probably half of my games do not come with widescreen resolution options. I simply use the LCD scaling option in nVidia control panel to play the games at 4:3.

Of course you could go to the Widescreen Gaming Forum, where many users post solutions for playing legacy games in widescreen.

Or, if you can handle the stretching and distortion, you can also use nVidia control panel to play the game in widescreen regardless.

After playing WS for a few weeks, I will never go back to 4:3. The WS experience is so much more immersive.
