Do more laws make a better society?

I believe that less laws make a better functioning society.

Discuss.

We have our civil liberties and our basic laws that protect us from physical harm and fraud. Do we need more?

Half and half. Laws keep the majority of people in check, but the troublemakers go to lengths just to break the laws.

P&N forum?

No and Yes...depends on the laws..

yes making laws such as ....If someone kills someone..they go to jail is good..those kind of laws are needed....

Laws saying I cant spend my money on online gambling are NOT.

I believe the numerical amount of laws is irrelevant. What matters are the context and the quality of said rules as it relates to society.

Exactly how does the number of laws affect a society, by the way?

I agree. We should have laws protecting people's civil liberties and from harm. However I think we have strayed away from that and made all sorts of wierd laws.

That depends

Laws are important for a society to function. Our country does not want people to drive above a certain speed in certain areas, so we have laws in place. This works for the most part.

Laws on top of laws on top of laws on top of laws are insane. Sometimes adding laws is not necessary, rather you should be more worried about enforcing laws that are already in place.

And remember, Al Capone was taken in for tax evasion. Sometimes it's important to have a large number of laws.

More laws complicate things and cause more red tape for our useless congress to argue about ;)

I think to say either more laws or less laws makes a better society is pretty arbitrary and... well, stupid. It depends on what the laws say.

If we got rid of all of the laws against murder, rape, theft, etc., we'd have less laws but it would not be an improvement. If we added a bunch of laws against chewing gum, spitting, swearing, etc., we'd have more laws but it would not be an improvement.

Who are the "we?" The federal government? Do you propose that the federal gov. just pass laws that protect our civil liberties and leave everything else to the states? Or do you propose a sort of Anarchy establishment.

People who think number of laws means anything are the ones who need lots of laws that protect them from their own stupidity.

If you can keep corruption out of the judicial system, a society with few laws, a strong sense of right and wrong, and a devotion to the concept of "intent of the law" is going to be a better one than one that has to enact more and more laws to cover every specific situation that a lawyer has tried to wrangle his client out of.

Some laws are good - some are bad. I think everyone will at least agree on this.

There is no way to answer this question without breaking it down to a lower level of granularity.

I agree, but people's moral judgement and sense of right and wrong have different bending points. This is where the law comes in.

these are the types of laws I'm talking about. Who are we hurting by selling beer on sundays? How can there be laws that say which days of the week we can sell certain items?
