It's definitely a real issue...you should try googling it

Pirates have never stopped pirating.

They are not going to be going after a cruise ship though.

What happens is they stalk ports and then follow out people they know with big bank...they also use radar on the open seas to target uber yachts.

Most people don't try to sail alone in open territory...there is safety with multiple boats and radios.

Pirates generally target merchant vessals, as in cargo ships.

The hell they aren't. They don't normally attack them, but they will if they're right in front of them.

I am not saying they don't, but we are talking US/near US waters here. I haven't read about Carnival getting overrun by pirates. Hell, I go offshore quite often and I have never really considered "pirates" in my safety plan.

cruise starts in Argentina...far from U.S. waters?

they exist, but I've never heard too many stories about anything outside of Africa / the Indian Ocean (probably smaller navies than the US/Canada/Europe/Russia)

If it happens, just say "Parlay!" to the pirates.
According to the Code of the brethren, set down by the pirates Morgan and Bartholomew , they have to take you to their Captain. And they can do you no harm until the parlay is complete.

I heard it somewhere. :D

not to worry, cruise liners usually hire a few ninjas for these types of encounters

I watched a show about how cruise ships are equipped with crazy weapons to fight off pirates. Like they have these things that emit sounds that will make you sick/pass out.

I am being completely serious btw.

off some asian coasts/africa i think there are still pirate problems. they board shipping vessels and stuff though. not cruiseliners.

all they'd really need is one 50 cal sniper or machine gun in the cruiseliner though... snipe a pirates boat and theyd have a heck of a time trying to figure out where to return fire.

People still dress up as cowboys, so there's got to be some people who still dress up as pirates.

So besides the question "wtf... a cruise to frickin Antarctica?" let's examine a well organized pirate raid vs. your average cruise ship. We're talking Carnival, Norwegian, etc.

Not only does the cruise ship have a well armed, trained, ex-military security detail but also access to satellite communications and long range radios. Now unless Capt. Hook can jam those frequencies (don't think so) the boat will see strange people with parrots many miles away and alert nearby friendlies. Friendlies with large weapons.

Yeah! They'll call in the ARRGGHHHmy.

That is interesting but why would you want to use non-lethal force against pirates?
At minimum I would want their boat sunk.

Pirates exist all around you. Many of them you won't even know that they're a pirate. You may have engaged in some pirating yourself in your lifetime when you illegally downloaded a song/movie or made a copy of a friend's CD for yourself. So, yes you should be concern with pirates, even on a cruise ship.

Yes, you should bring ninjas with you. That way if you get attacked by pirates we can finally answer the question...

There's a lot of smug denial in this thread.

As already pointed out, there have been recent pirate attacks on ships...even a big cruise ship. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories...show/main1018725.shtml

I watched a documentary about this attack. It took place over the space of over an hour (maybe two or three). The passengers they interviewed said that they kept waiting and waiting for the the navy (anybody's navy) to show up, but help never came.

The ship was pelted with Rocket-Propelled Grenades and automatic weapons fire. At least one grenade exploded inside a passenger cabin. I don't remember if any crew were hurt, but none of the passengers were.

The cruise ship used an sonic weapon mounted on the rear of the ship to fend off the attackers. The man using the sonic weapon was shot at, and didn't really have any shelter to hide behind. Some shots came very close.

The cruise line would not state whether or not more lethal weapons were kept onboard.

yeah they are. you hear stories all the time in the harbor. One couple was out sailing, and then had their boat in for the evening. and they heard a boat approaching at night while they were anchored. The guy on the boat went, grabbed his shotgun, ran to the side of the boat where they were attempting, fired once in the darkness, definitely hit the guy and they drove off...
scary stuff...cause these are Johnny Depp pirates, these are basically like dirtbags on the water stealing from people!

From everything that I've heard, the straight between Indonesia and Malaysia is flat out hazardous for ships to go through simply because it's narrow, the countries are relatively poor, and neither country can afford to really police it.

There was a situation in China where some pirates borrowed some customs uniforms, boarded a ship, lined up the crew, put garbage bags over their heads, and shot every single one of them. After that incident, China got on the ball and started policing their coasts, arrested, and I believe sentenced every person involved to be executed by firing squad. And as you know, China pulls through quickly on that one.

For a long time piracy was low because of the cold war. US and Soviet ships were all over the place and the last thing anyone wanted to do was start anything with them around. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want either power the least bit upset with me. Get both upset and you've basically got nowhere to hide. At the end of the cold war, the number of ships and patrols plummeted leaving the seas largely uncontrolled.
