Do modem INIT strings actually work?

I am looking to get some more speed out of my crappy dial-up, i am an USR 56k, model 5686, i am wondering how to make it faster, where can i get init strings?

Yes they work. Best place for init stings is in your manual.

a good init for a USR modem would be at&f1&c1&d2 for performance. but inmy experience at working for an isp if it is just a little tweaking it works ok.. but a drastic improvement probably wont come of it. also you might want to check out www.modemhelp.org/inits/

Very rarely do INIT strings really help you significantly. Just keep up to date on your drivers and you'll be OK.

Yes they work, but seldom increase overall performance.

My favorite command setting is S11 dialing speed. Almost all modems can handle S11=50 and some of the better brands handle S11=37 . I don't know why but it annoys me to no end when I go to someones place and use their system and they don't have speed dialing on. There's nothing worse (IMHO) then listening to a slow Tone dial.

EDIT:
BTW default setting for S11 is 95 (super slow).
