Most of the guys I've asked say "no"... may I ask for the rationale behind this?

because the man proposes to the woman and offers a ring for the acceptance. she wears the ring indicating that she has accepted a propasl for marriage.

So why can't she buy one for him, too?

So basically, once the woman accepts the marriage proposal, she wears the ring showing she's "taken" until marriage. The man, however, is to remain ring-free, without any public sign of his commitment until the actual wedding day?

Men are practical, women are not(For the most part). Men would much rather have a wide screen TV a new laptop or hell even an XBox or PS2

Those things don't last forever and it would suck if you have to keep using the big screen TV just because it was a engagement gift 30 years ago.

And diamond engagement rings have any worth...I'd get more value out of a wide screen TV in one weekend than my entire life with a single piece of jewelry

BINGO. For a guy the ring is worthless - you just wear it b/c your wife gave it to you. It's like any other item/piece of clothing she gives you. For a women though - it's everything, like jewelry in general.

it makes me sad that my g/f will not know it is common to buy the guy something 🙁 im gonna fork over for this nice ring and get laid as payment. sure, that is great, but when im not getting laid i wanna know why it was worth it, for example some new games for my xbox or a new LCD screen 😉

j/k of course...i dont need anything else. id rather just save up to make her happy, because in the long run, that is all that really matters.

I'm not engaged, but I wear a ring my girlfriend gave me on our first Christmas. She wanted to buy me a ring, but I didn't want her to spend a lot of money on it and I definitely didn't want anything fancy. It's unpolished titanium.

I'd go as far as to say that I'd break up with her if she bought me a ring... if she doesn't know me well enough to know I wouldn't want it, we don't belong together.

Who am I kidding, I'd pawn it and buy beer. 🙂

I pissed off my gf by telling her that I wouldn't wear a wedding band if we got married. I refuse to have thing encircling my fingers; it's a pet peeve of mine. They bother me so much, I just can't stand to wear them.

Exactly. The only reason men buy jewerly is because women want them too.

Technically engagement rings for either party aren't "traditional"... its a development of only the last 50 years or so, before that people didn't have money to blow on a wasteful thing like an "engagement ring".
