do many people break the fourth wall here at ATOT??

what's a fourth wall

It's an expression taken from the stage and screen where breaking the fourth wall means to speak to the audience as if they are part of the show.

A good example is Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

It's a bit of a stretch to call meeting other forum-goers breaking the fourth wall, though...

edit: fixed typos

I wouldn't mind meeting some. I can't recall seeing any conveniently close midwest meets though.
Never heard it referred to as "breaking the fourth wall" before though.

It's professionally called an "aside."

It doesn't mean that they have to talk to the audience during an aside, though.

i've met 2 of the people from FS/FT forums, and it was me buying something from them. it was a local deal. one for a stick of ram, one for a barebone computer. worked out great.

never met anyone from ATOT, nor do i really care to 😛

Correct.

a·side

adverb

To or toward the side: step aside.
Out of one's thoughts or mind: put my doubts aside.
Apart: a day set aside for relaxing.
In reserve; away: put a little money aside.
Set out of the way; dispensed with: All joking aside, can you swim 15 miles?

noun

A piece of dialogue intended for the audience and supposedly not heard by the other actors on stage.
A remark made in an undertone so as to be inaudible to others nearby.
A parenthetical departure; a digression.

Yes and No, an aside, in theater is:
\A*side"\, n. Something spoken aside; as, a remark made by a stageplayer which the other players are not supposed to hear.

When your speaking on stage, and the other players (actors/actresses) are not who you are talking to, you are generaly talking directly to the audience(only people left except yourself). It doesn't HAVE to be that way, you could just be talking to yourself, and the aside is just an open view into the character's thoughts. However, it's commonly used to talk to the audience, like in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
