I use it almost exclusively. Other than at home I hardly ever run across an open wifi network.

same here. and i didnt even turn on wifi until i got two of the amazon freebies that were wifi download only. so, i set up my work wifi on it. still dont have the home wifi on it yet, i use my laptop if im doing anything that would require that kind of speed.

My hospital has guest WiFi, and it's maxed out at 7am with too many users... and refuses any new connections..

I forgot to mention that both my kids have an iPod Touch (or similar device). They are frustrated by the lack of wi-fi availability away of the homes I mentioned above.

If I step outside my house and there isn't an internet connection while I'm walking on my street, then having a data plan is a necessity for me for a smartphone.

There isn't enough coffee shops, malls, restaurants, with wifi that could compensate for that.

I only use Wifi at home. But I'm not a heavy data user. I use more than 100mb/mo but less than 500mb.

don't restaurants..etc change their wifi passwords daily and you have to ask for what it is?
i pick up all kinds of wifi's from local places as i'm in the heart of it all and i can't access any of them without a pass.

With lots of public places like uni campuses, shopping malls, restaurants, etc. having free wi-fi, do many people still use data plans?

What is the point in a data plan, when extensive browsing on a large site costs plenty? I only use to check out sports scores, or for a quick glance on Facebook or something.
Considering the amount of money being spent by the wireless carriers to deploy increasing larger pipe for data transport, yeah I would say a lot of people are consuming data plans quite happily.

I have unlimited data plan for my iphone I use free wifi at the borders bookstore and at some fast food resturants to save some battery if you use wifi. 3G network eats up alot of battery juice.

I didn't realize just how much I used it until I travelled overseas and tried to rely on WIFI... Thus why I bought a Unlocked Nexus One and some prepaid international SIM cards
