I have a ton of hotwheels/matchbox cars in my cellar, along with things like old board games. Do kids still play with stuff like that? They're not in mint condition by any means so I couldn't really sell them for anything. I'm wondering if I should just toss them out.

When the kid was ~7 and under but legos were taking over and now dominate.

Yard sale them. Some parent will buy.

My kids do - then again I don't have a game console hooked up to the tv nor portable gaming devices (iPod, nintendo ds, etc). What makes hotwheels fun are the tracks.

And some of the hot wheel/matchbox cars are worth a few bucks - check around as some people collect them.

Board games - donate to a charity.

I do have some tracks...I forgot about that. I'm going to see what I got down there and inventory it.

I don't think so.... my little nephews are more into their nintendo DSs : /

Fail. My nephews play theirs THE WHOLE TIME we're camping. I've been severely tempted to stomp it and chuck it off the nearest convenient cliff.

I see Matchbox cars for sale everywhere, so I can only conclude that the majority of normal, well-adjusted boys play with them. Of course now they're from China, so we can assume they're likely made of Cadmium and Lead. But at least exposure is limited to several years.

I'm surprised parents let their kids get all consumed with video games like that.
But they do...

My son has a small collection of Matchbox cars and plays with them on a regular basis.

Maybe if you installed some small wheels onto a cellphone it would count as a matchbox car.

Yes they do. If I could find tracks that are just tracks to put together, instead of some dumb overly expensive theme set that has like two pieces of track and a giant POS motorized thing, my kids would play with the cars more.

My son is a little more than 2 years and loves them. He only has 8 of them though, but somehow a 2 year old can play with the same 8 cars over and over day after day. I should probably splurge and buy some more.

I worked in the toy section at Target back 10 years ago once during Christmas. All I ever saw was middle aged dudes buying them. They'd get mad if you didn't have a certain number.

But they do...

It keeps them quiet and they can't possibly get injured or make a mess with a DS.

I never had the cars when I was a kid but I did have die cast trains. I still have them. Used to play with them constantly.

Too bad the Matchbox cars aren't mint. If they were Lesney cars, I'd buy them at in a heartbeat. :D

But yeah... kids still play with toy cars. The good ones that were made in England (Matchbox and Corgi), France (Majorette) and Japan (Tomica) were built so bulletproof, I see kids in the neighborhood playing with cars that were passed down a couple generations. I saw a kid in a sandbox the other day with a Matchbox firetruck from the mid-70's. All Hot Wheels and the cars made today are all made in Asia (new Matchbox, new Corgi, new Majorette, etc.) and are so crappy they don't last a year before completely falling apart. They probably have lead paint to boot. :p

And it's not just boys that play with them. My daughter plays with them too. I have to admit that the Polly Pockey die-cast cars are pretty cool and every once in a while I bust her playing with my old Matchboxes in my office. ;) Fortunately, she doesn't crash them up like most boys. She just likes to pretend she's driving.
