Do ketchup and mustard belong in the fridge?

This was a question with my roommates from last year too, and it rises again! Ketchup and mustard keep just fine in the cupboard, as I see it, instead of taking up space in the fridge. Now, it doesn't bother me, but I'm curious what the AT concensus is.

I like 'em cold, thank you very much, even if I never, ever, put ketchup on anything.

I think ketchup will change color if you keep it out. There was a Hints from Heloise or Dear Abby about it.

The mustard definitely says 'refrigerate after opening'....the ketchup doesn't. But I keep 'em both in the refer.

I can't stand cold ketchup...yet, I keep it in the fridge anyways just because I'd prefer to have ice cold ketchup on my fries, rather than a few green blobs here and there if some sort of fungus were to develop.

In the fridge. Bacterial growth in the ketchup is really not of a concern in the ketchup due to the acidity of the product, however storing them at room temperature provides near optimum growth for molds and yeasts.

Mustard is much more tasty cold, unless its a deli dijon style, not just some plain old supermarket style though. Then its better warm, well room temp.

Must must be kept in the fridge...it says it on the damn bottle/jar. Ketchup goes in the fridge, even if it doesn't have to be.

Anyone keep mayo in the cupboard? :D

Yes, they do. Ready to eat stuff should not be kept at room temperature (40-140) for any prolonged length of time.

Well Hotchic, judging from the poll and responses here, I'd say you were the oddball ;) :p

I used to put almost everything in the fridge until a friend mentioned her rule of thumb. If the supermarket sells it outside a fridge, it can stay outside the fridge. So peanut butter can sit outside too. Kinda mind boggling, but I guess it works.

but that's before it's opened. Mayo is not refrigerated before it's opened, and there is no way I'd store that outside the fridge after opening it.

We usually keep them in the cupboard...there's hardly ever any room in the fridge and they keep just fine.

I like em cold, right next to the beer. Some fools like to keep their mayo in the pantry, although it won't make it rot or anything - all the eggs in there keep it acidic enought to kill any bacteria.

But i'm a miracle whip kind of guy.
