I don't know about junkyards, but there's big money in recycling. Especially in computers and related tech. I worked at a company that dealt with computer and printer cartridge recycling. I thought it was interesting that we shipped our broken printer cartridges to China. I suppose they grind up the plastic and reuse it.
I find this hard to believe. Around me (Atlanta) if you want to toss an old PC and or monitor the local Goodwill wants it to be in running order with a legal copy of an operating system on it or no dice. To do the right thing in terms of recycling then you are paying them money to take it or catch BB in a good mood to take it. Otherwise it is the covert trash deposit.

hmmmm. how can they buy a vehicle for so cheap? I mean cmon! $50 for a vehicle? I bet the darn seats in there worths more... what state are you in Roger?

Thing is by the time you are looking to junk a car you are just trying to get rid of the damn thing. You aren't trying to sit on it for years waiting for someone to want a particular part off of it so you can make a few extra dollars.

It's all about gold. And the company I worked for largely dealt with printer cartridges. You know those donation boxes you see at work and what have you for old printer cartridges, cell phones and crap? It all went to my company. I know for a fact the owner was made out of bucks.

There's a difference between large scale recycling and piecemeal like Goodwill.
