Do junk yards make a lot of profit?

probably. There are no 'decent' junk yards I can find around here outside of NW atlanta. They pay like $300 for a car with usually minor engine issues, and resell the parts for many times that. I know my gmother got screwed into selling her 93 infiniti j30 for $350 and it needed a transmission. buncha crap if you ask me,

Huge profits in junk yards, consider this, junk yards in my state (ct) will buy your junk vehcile for no more than $50, now they sell engines for $800, fenders and doors for $75 each, you do the math.

hmmmm. how can they buy a vehicle for so cheap? I mean cmon! $50 for a vehicle? I bet the darn seats in there worths more... what state are you in Roger?

Read carefully ....(ct)... ;)

Connecticut, when you call the junk yard to scrap a car, they are not going to pay you $1,000 for it, I junk a lot of cars, the most they will pay is $50.

Seems to me though that they would have to charge those kinds of prices just to stay in business, because probably 90+% of the junk they get will never be sold.

Remember a junkyard has storage costs (rent or mortgage payment, property taxes), property taxes on their "inventory," employee expense, disposal expense, etc. plus a lot of what they get doesn't necessarily sell.

If it was a high profit easy business there would be lots more of them, believe me. You can probably do OK at it if you are hard working, have good business sense and a little luck.

For some cars they will actually make you pay them $30 to come pick it up around here. One of the small junkyards near me just ripps the engines and transmission out and scraps the bodies. Then they sell the drivetrains to a rebuilder. If they happen to sell a few parts before they get around to doing that great. They will hold onto some cars that they think they can sell a lot stuff off of for a while though.

I love just going to the junkyards and walking around.

Yeah, it is pretty amazing at some of the things you can find there :)

my dad (who, among other things, sells used cars) was talking to another used car salesmen, who did rather well in the business. the guy told him if he knew how much money was in a salvage yard years ago, he never would have gotten into selling working cars.

a guy a few miles out of town runs a salvage yard, hes busy as hell, but i know hes making good money. built a new bldg for the business, new home, new car...does very well. i thought my dad did well with his drycleaning plant, but i have a feeling the guy at the junkyard is doing better. considering the price of new replacement parts for cars, salvage yards can make a great deal of money, and still not charge anywhere near a new part price. i go there to buy parts for my car before i head to the dealer; prices at a dealership (at least, without the discount) are damned evil.

My experierience is that most slavage yards do give warranties, in response to an earlier comment. Back when I was a kid during the 50s, my uncle had a salvage yard full of what would now be considered top notch classics. Ford and Chevy coupes, Buicks, Caddies, etc. He had one (a Packard I think) that had belonged to Al Capone. It was armored and had very thick bullet proof windows, some of which were shot up but not out. Dreamland. Bekker

Junk yards or auto salvage yards can make a lot of money if run right in a populated area. Iron runs $100 a ton, Catalytic converter scrap runs from $15-200 depending on the size and type. so an average car for iron weight and cat value alone are about $250. that's not including value of pick and pull parts which come with a warranty on some parts others are as is no warranty. the total breakdown on a 4 door sedan scrap value is about $800 if cleaned right. The person selling the car to them gets $100 give or take and sometimes have to pay if it needs to be towed. What really stops junk yards from popping up all over the place is the cost of insurance that they need to get licenced.

I don't know about junkyards, but there's big money in recycling. Especially in computers and related tech. I worked at a company that dealt with computer and printer cartridge recycling. I thought it was interesting that we shipped our broken printer cartridges to China. I suppose they grind up the plastic and reuse it.

There is one not too far from me that I really like and probably has really cheap overhead. Its a 'You pull it' yard so you don't really need much in the way of employees. The positive for consumers is that its cheap. Its YMMV since they don't list all the cars they have but its only $1 to enter the yard and look around. I got a new cluster to replace my failed on in my civic for $16. I got an AC fan for $7. You get a 30 day warranty on parts although some parts its only 'replace with similar part' which may or may not exist in the yard
