He must not have had much circulation in that apartment.
It says he left it overnight!

It is a rubber cement. Highly flammable.

polymers (typically latex) mixed in a solvent such as acetone, hexane, heptane or benzene to keep them fluid enough to be used

He did what you should never do with a solvent/fuel, make into a vapor :(

He technically made a bomb.
Blow air into a container, the airbed, mixed with vapors from the the solvent + spark = boom.

Contact cement (pliobond, weldwood, etc.) is like that. Highly flammable VOCs chiefly toluene can form explosive mixtures and flash. Its blast velocity is slow but given the large area of the bed balloon the sudden increase of air pressure can move walls and floors considerable distance - much more than designed! The victims likely have suffered permanent hearing damage.

You haven't seen how most people do repairs have you? If a little is enough, then more must be better!

How much you want to bet the first thought he had, after the explosion, was "WTF???" (or the German equivalent). ;)

An experimental German chef accidentally blew off both his hands attempting to concoct a "molecular gastronomy" dish with liquid nitrogen, a newspaper report said on Monday.

How do you create an explosion with liquid nitrogen (and inert molocule)???

I'm guessing it was a physical state change, not a chemical reaction. Perhaps like pouring the liquid nitrogen into a pot of boiling water.
