Do iPods support long filenames? Special characters?

I came to the realization that if I bought one of the larger capacity iPods (40 or 60 GB), it would serve just as good as a backup of all my music on my computer (in the event of a hard drive crash) as well as a portable media player.

However, I am very picky about the organization and naming scheme of my music. They are all organized in individual folders by artist, and each and every file has a specific naming scheme it follows, making my music selection very efficient. I spend many hours organizing these files, and was wondering; if I were to put a complete dump of all my music on the iPod, and then take it to another computer, and dump it all from the iPod to there, would all of my files appear EXACTLY the same as they did on my original source computer? Regardless of filename size or special characters?

For example, I have a lot of electronic music (techno, trance, etc.) which I keep separated from the rest of my music. So if I had a filename like this:

[Electronica] Cafe Del Mar- Energy 52 (Super Duper Hooblahblah Whatever Mix).mp3

Would be restored with this same filename?

If you use iTunes, it will often rename the files, not maintain directory structure, place them in random hidden folders, etc. Not a big deal if the ID3 tags are correct.

But if you use it as an external disk, works fine (foreign characters, long names, etc.)

Windows "versions" are formatted FAT32 and have the same limitations it does, nothing major therefore.

This is my experience, I don't know all.

Cheers.

Sounds good; I would not be interested in using iTunes. Thanks for the info!
