Do iOS have better app support than Android?

I keep hearing issues about apps on Android while Apps on iOS seems to do just fine. People are happy with their apps unlike Android which a lot of people tend to complain about issues.

A good example is the Facebook app on Android.

I've heard a lot of people on this very subforum complain about the Facebook app on iOS.
This is not to say that the Android version is equal or better than the iOS version.

I'm not a Facebook fanboy and thankfully, I haven't installed or used either junk on my phone system.

The facebook app just sucks all the way around. Regardless of device, os, etc. my gf always complains about it on her iphone. It's slow, doesn't load, and freezes.

It's pretty similar on my gnex. I rarely use it anymore in part because it is very slow to load. I've tried 4g, 3g and wifi. No difference.

Other than that it's hit or miss. Less devices to support in ios so there's that advantage. But really it comes down to whether or not the developer has optimized the app. Overall though my experience is pretty similar.

I realize that half of AT here is like fuck Facebook, but it could be that a good chunk of the population here is older and wasn't in college when it first started. Or it could be that I'm Asian and I swear that the adoption rate amongst Asians is huge.

Moving on, the Facebook app is trash but I think we finally have parity in the past few months after the new interface was rolled out for Android.

But remember, it took til like December 2010 or something for Facebook to get push notifications on Android, and we're still waiting for a tablet version. I realize Facebook for iPad took a while to develop, but if anything apps for Android tablets are just.... horrendous. Twitter? Facebook? Nothing. It's great Android is finally getting Flipboard, but ask any iOS user who has an iPhone and iPad. The iPhone version isn't interesting at all once you've used the iPad one. Yet we see so much excitement for the Android one. As someone who had an iPad, I barely care about having Flipboard on my phone.

I feel like apps still get priority treatment on iOS. Even though they try, small new features roll out first on iOS. Foursquare for example rolled out its new interface across the board, but small changes they've made in the past few months have always been iOS first.

There's no comparison, none. Android apps work and that's the extent of it. There are a few rogue ones that really have the wow factor, but most have a UI that looks like it came from a 7th graders computer class project. That's not to say the apps are bad, but polish wise they're lightyears behind iOS and it's not getting any better. I have about $400'ish invested in iOS apps and $250'ish in Android ones.

Facebook app is now pretty much equal on both. I think in general iOS apps are bit more polished but that is slowly changing. Dropbox and Evernote are both superior on Android as an example

Seriously? We are going to use facebook as the standard for all apps? That is just... dumb. Facebook can't program apps for their life IMO, they never have had a good one except... webOS suprisingly.

Yes. iOS normally gets apps first and they're normally more polished. Android apps are ugly as sin, but they're functional.

Facebook has no clue how to program an app. On any platform.

Top tier apps on both platforms are top quality though, they look good and function like they're supposed to.

i'd say iOS still has the edge in terms of apps coming out first and overall polish.

like bateluer said though, top tier apps are pretty much equal.


if you're talking tablets, no contest. iOS > android.

A lot of crashes on iOS happen because of incorrect memory management. When these issues you see an app just crash instead of just getting messed up. I think the "crash" stats can be sometimes be misleading.

In iOS 5 Apple added support for Automatic Reference Counting. I have developed one app using arc with great success. Once people stop targeting iOS 4 and switch to ARC, I think you will much more graceful handling of issues. iOS 5 has 80% marketshare. This will probably go up even more once the iPhone 5 comes out and people retire old devices.

Facebook runs a lot better on my HTC Incredible than it does on my iTouch or my wife's iPhone4.
As for other apps, ios and apps and android apps trade blows.

Well you can always use the example that Tim Cook used. Twitter on iOS (iPad) vs Twitter on Android (tablets).

I'm talking about the newsfeed. My biggest problem with the Facebook app is if you use a button twice you activate whatever menu is below the current screen (like Messages or Events).

Newsfeed is just a long list its going to look similar whether its a webpage or not.
Not sure what you mean by your other point.
