I don't know very many indians but I'm thinking they would consider themselves distinct indians or middle eastern. Yet on another board someone was arguing that India is in the continent of Asia and therefore they're considered Asian and has Asian blood. If that's true then Russians would be considered Asians too with Asian blood.

Old thread.

i would imagine they consider themselves indian... but if they had to choose between the two, they'd probably choose asian, considering india is not part of the middle east and only dumb white people seem to think that it is.

I'm a Pakistani and consider myself of the indian race. There is no such thing as middle eastern which is an American made up term. People there like to call themselves Arabs. I think 1.5 billion people are enough for them to have a separate identity :p

most of my indian friends and clients consider themselves asian.

culturally, far eastern asians and indians share a lot, religion, cultural background, world view, image of themselves, approach to family and society.

Doesn't "middle eastern" typically include Persians as well Arabs?

Asian ... if we had to

Although most people from the Indian sub-continent (India, pakistan, bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives) would themselves as "Indians" in a racial context

Same for me - I'm Indian, but my second choice would just be Asian.

Why would an Indian person consider themselves "Middle Eastern"? India isn't very close to the made up "Middle East". Last I checked India was in Asia.

If I am not mistaken, in UK when someone says "Asian" they think South Asian (Indian, beloved patriot, etc). Only in US / Canada did East Asian (Chinese, Japanese, Korean..) become the stereotypical "Asians".

So to answer your silly question, I am Indian and I consider myself Asian. If I had to be more specific I would say South Asian.

They are Indian.
That said, India is in the continent of Asia and therefore they are also Asian. Indian is a subset of Asian.

Asian. India is and always has been part of the continent of Asia... No where near the "Middle East"

india was the middle east until some US mapmakers screwed up during WWII and put the labels on wrong.

which makes way more sense than calling the near east 'middle east.'

near east: holy land, arabia
middle east: india, pakistan
far east: china, japan

I was taught in school that biologically theres 3 main races - caucasoid, mongoloid, and negroid. I've always wondered where both indian and middle-eastern people fit into those catagories.
