Do I want a Wii?

My wonderful wife gave me a seemingly empty box yesterday morning, which upon opening I found contained a single sheet of paper. On the paper she put a picture of the Wii and Zelda and told me that I was entitled to get one as my Christmas present (she quite understandably couldn't find one in the stores.) This was quite sweet of her as she heard me talking to some friend about how much fun the Wii looked like.

However, I am trying to decide now, do I really want a Wii? I mean it looks like fun, Zelda looks like a great game and I haven't owned a Nintendo since the 64 so I could catch up on some of the great games I missed (read: Metroid). So there is appeal there for me to get it, but I am wondering if I will really play it long term, or if I will beat Zelda and then it will just sit there.

Those of you that have Wii's and Xbox 360s (which I have already), have you found the magic of the Wii to have worn off and you don't play it much any more? Or is there enough lasting appeal in the Wii to keep you playing it for a long time to come?

Thanks for the help!

I don't have an Xbox 360, but I have an Xbox and PS2 and was playing both regularly until I got the Wii. I'm a little behind with regard to video games, because I don't like to spend a lot of money on them, so I bought both systems just a few months ago. So the systems and all of the games were new to me.

I haven't touched the Xbox or PS2 since I got my Wii.

What game(s) did you guys get, which ones did you like?

Are the graphics absolutely terrible, or do you not notice because they are so fun?

I have Zelda (great), Trauma Center (great) and Super Swing Golf (haven't played it enough to judge it yet).

I don't care about the graphics, so I'm not the one to ask about that.

I have Zelda and Call of Duty 3 and I haven't hardly touched them since I got my Wii. Is it because they are bad games? No, not at all. Why then? Because Wii Sports is simply awesome and great to play with friends :)

As far as graphics, think Xbox-ish, but there is still potential there considering these are release games and the system is still new.

I just got a Wii a couple of days ago, and it's the most fun I've had with video games in as long as I can remember. I got a bunch of people to play, including my 60+ year old Dad, and other people who rarely if every play games, and they had a good time. It's totally worth it.

I think you and your wife can both benefit from a Wii.

I just beat Zelda (yesterday in fact), and I am not sure at this point if there are other compelling games. However, you and your wife will enjoy Wii sports which comes bundled with the Wii. There are some promising games coming out in 1st quarter of '07 though.

The graphics are not horrible. Not as sophisticated as other next-gen consoles, sure, but it is more than sufficient. Have a look at what Capcom did with RE4 with Gamecube. Zelda looks amazing at some parts of the game as dwell.

I am thinking of picking up some Gamecube games which I missed and wait for some better games for the Wii.

Thanks for all of the awesome replies, I think you have all talked me into getting one. :)

We have friends over all of the time and I teach a Bible Study for high schoolers, so the interaction aspect of it seems like the biggest plus. It sounds like fun to be able to look stupid while playing stupid games...

I guess now the waiting begins... I heard that finding them in stock will still be an issue for a while.

Hey, if you teach a bible study for high schoolers, you should get (if you don't already have it) The Bible Game for Xbox, it's actually really fun (from what I remember the time I played it).

I had a wii for a short time when it was released. I didn't really enjoy it very much.. I found the controller to be lacking in accuracy and slightly hard to use when paired with the numbchuck (even after synchronization)...

The Zelda game was fun, Trauma Center was not... so repetitive and juvenile, the wii sports games were probably the best part. Also the excite truck was kinda neat with the steering wheel accesory.

All in all, I may have just gotten one that had config issues, but I think I just prefer the standard game controller. However, I will say for $250 it would be silly to get anything else.

Better yet, why don't you want a Wii? :D

Tons of GC you can play on it. Zelda is fun, looking to get metal slug anthology next the later titles that are coming out soon.

The graphics would eventually be better than regular Xbox from last gen but nothing close to current gen. I am currently playing Zelda which is always good. All my other games are sitting on the wayside but Wii Sports is awesome but obviously begs to be played with others. I think of the Wii as the Nintendo DS of the current generation. What the DS Lite lacks in Graphical Prowess compared to the PSP, it makes up for in innovative games/gameplay. I preordered Warioware for the Wii

Love the Wii, just wish it was easier to find additional Wii remotes

Zelda = Awesome
Wii Sports = Awesome
Trauma Centre = Awesome

I think ill rent some games before buying any more, may have to pick up Madden and Rayman. Perhaps Elebits too...

The Wiiiiiiiiiii is a blast. I'm addicted and so is my fiancee... mainly to bowling on Wii Sports. But just recently we've started buying Gamecube games that we missed out on like Mario Party 6, Mario Kart DD, Mario Golf, etc. You can't go wrong with those titles... they're a blast with friends! Graphics don't ever cross my mind on the Wii unless I'm playing an RPG (which I get bored with easily).

Oh and some great titles are coming out soon! Wii Play and Mario Party 8 FTW!!!

How do you play games? If you are a loner, I'd suggest sticking with the 360. There are tons of fun games to play on your own or online (GRAW, R6, COD, GOW, Far Cry, FEAR, etc.). The Wii is more of a 2-or-more-person system, honestly. I use my Wii when my wife wants to play a game with me or when I have friends or family over. I've found Zelda to be a little bit on the boring side, but then I prefer FPS and arcade racers. Are you a social person, or does your wife like fun games? If so then heck yeah, it's an awesome system. I have both and it just depends on whether I have company or not :)

I have a Wii and an Xbox360, and my 360 gets A LOT more play. I haven't played Zelda in over a month now, I still haven't beaten the first temple. I dunno, but the game just didn't suck me in.

Whenever I have some time to play a game I'm just like "I'll throw in Gears of War for a lil bit and kick some ass..."

Next thing I know, 2 hours have passed. The fact that I play GoW w/my friends almost every time I play it probably has something to do with it. I can play GoW w/my friends when they are at their houses. To play the Wii w/my friends, they have to be at my house right next to me.

The most played game on my Wii is Wii Sports Bowling. I've played that game for over 6 hours straight w/my friend. The Wii is definitely a great sytem and has a lot of potential, and in my opinion, Wii + Xbox360 is the perfect combination.

One thing that really bothers me about the Wii now is the graphics. Don't get me wrong, I don't need fancy smancy graphics ... but when I got the component cables, it made the picture so sharp that it makes the jaggies eye cutting. The jaggies on component video for the Wii are horrible. It's even worse when playing Gamecube games. WHen I played RE4 on my Wii hooked up w/component, it looked like the background was just getting sliced to all hell when I was moving through the forest.

It almost makes me want to go back to the washed out, blurred graphics of the normal composite cables because atleast the blurred textures doesn't show as many jaggies.

I'd probably get a 360 or a PS3, but that's only because I prefer sports games like NFL/NCAA football, etc...

I haven't bought a system since the Dreamcast because I haven't seen a football game that's that much better than NFL2k1/NFL2k2.

You really just have to evaluate whether or not you need a wii to pretend you have a hulahoop around your waist.

i'm getting a little tired of hearing the "the wii is for multiplayer only" comments.

i'm a bit disappointed that there aren't many games out for it and it seems like its going to be a long time before there are more. they're coming out too slow.

although i haven't even been really playing much video games at all lately.
