Do I want a pentium 4 or an athlon xp?

I have been using AMD processors for the past four years now. I'm in the market for a new system, but now I am really confused. I only hear positives about the pentium 4 and the athlon xp. I keep hearing that generally the athlon xp is the "faster" processor (im not talking mhz). I mean, when it takes the pentium 2.4ghz to beat an athlon xp 2100 (1.7ghz?), I'm not sure what to think. I am attracted to the fact that the pentium 4 processors run cooler, but then I would be tempted to overclock my processor, meaning my system will just be as loud as an AMD system because I would need cooling for overclocking (right? tell me if im wrong). If I get a P4, at the moment im tempted to get a 1.8a, and the MSI 845 Ultra ARU motherboard. Is that a good choice? Would I only need PC2100 ram, or would PC2700 work, and would it provide any advantages? If I decided to go with the athlon xp, I will probably wait until the thoroughbred pops into the market, and then price will be the determinant of what I get. Thanks all

you wont need any additional cooling for the p4 when you o/c it. price wise the 1.6a may be a better deal as it is 50 dollars cheaper and can reach 2.133 ghz with no problems.

What kind of fan would you suggest? If i wanted to overclock, would I need something like the Thermaltake Volcano 7+? Or could I get by with something cheaper and quieter?

I am using the heatsink and fan that came with my 1.6a and I am getting 32C idle, 45C full load. As long as you have a good cooled case, you should be fine with the retail cooling solution.

as for what to do, amd or intel, if you can I would wait until the thoroughbred come out to see if its any good (reviews and such) and then base my decision on that and price.

on the other hand if you need one now (as I did) build you a Intel with northwood overclock that thing (mine is a 1.6a @2.13)
