I'm not sure if they're just dropping it off here, or if they are going to carry the mattress and springs all the way up to the 3rd floor for me. If tipping is necessary, what would be appropriate for each kind of delivery?

if they drop it off, just give them a smile and wave them off.

If they carry it up 3 flights, give each dude a fiver

If they're just dropping it off, then no.
If they're bringing it up a few flights of stairs I would consider it. Or just offer them a drink or something.

If they bring it up the stairs I would for sure tip and offer some form of beverage.
I'm sure it's worth tipping 10 bucks to two guys if they carry it up the stairs.

No, what's the point? They aren't working for tips. The so called "free" delivery is actually included in the price you paid for the mattress.

I never do, and never will.

As senseamp said, you pay for the delivery buy purchasing the mattress in the first place.

I just bought a new mattress with "free" delivery and didn't tip. Then again, I live in a 1 BR apartment on the ground floor, so it took about 3 minutes for them to unload and setup the bed.

I always at least offer them a beer or a can of soda/bottle of water. I'm on the 2nd floor of an apartment so it's not as easy as just pulling up the truck and bringing it through the patio door.

Sometimes it's just better to let them drop it off and have a buddy help you carry in the stuff... most delivery guys could care less about your product because it's not theirs and they probably aren't getting paid enough so there's little reason for them to baby whatever it is they're delivering. Just a thought!

I tip by number of floors they have to come up. I'm on the fourth floor so I gave the guys $20 to divide between them.

we ordered pizza from papa john's and they charged a 'delivery fee' so we thought we didnt have to tip the delivery guy, but then the dude started whining and said he doesn't get anything if he gets no tip from us.

KRAMER: Did you offer those guys a drink?

JERRY: Uh, no. Should I have?

KRAMER: What kind of a person are you?

JERRY: I don't know.

Read all about what these folks have to deal with, Using their own vehicle, furnish their own gas & insurance, have to re- deliver to turds (scammers, complainers, whiners, etc.) for free.
And in most stores, the driver gets little, if any, of the "delivery fee". With the high price of gas these days, I never tip less than $5 on a pizza delivery (Unless, of course, the delivery time is considerably longer than quoted when ordering, then I deduct $1 for every 5 minutes, down to $2, which is the least I'll tip a pizza delivery driver.
Of the 2 delivery pizza stores here, I nearly always get mine in less than 30 minutes, even when quoted 45 to 60 minutes. One driver told me that my name was "on top of the board" at Papa John's. I assume that to be an indication of a good tipper (?)

I am the type of person who will tip nearly anyone that does an above average job at nearly anything in nearly any business.
I'm a Project Manager on Construction sites, and if I encounter a tradesman, or an entire crew who do their job properly, efficiently, and professionally, I will usually buy the entire crew a Lunch at the very least.

I tip delivery people.....

even if delivery was free I'd still tip them.

I worked delivery furniture during the summers when I was in high school...and we appreciated a few bucks for the hard work..
