I am building a 800 tbird and do not plan to overclock.
With an msi k7t pro2a mainboard and 16-32 mb tnt and 40 gb hdd,
Do I really need the 300 watt ps, or can I get by with a amd approved 250 and a case fan??

i just built a new sys and for about 3 days it was running fine with my old 250 w ps b4 i switched in a 300w. i would go with the specs personally tho, you dont want to mess anything up accidentally: (

Within a few moths you are going to put some new stuff inside. It would be a shame to buy a new PSU then. Better do it from the start.

i'd invest in a 300w simply for peace of mind, and knowing i would eventually swap out that old 250w- just get it done from the beginning. the hassle's still going to be there later.

I just bought a Enlight case with 400 watt sparkle amd approved ps for $130. From what I have read 300 watts is a minimum, more is better.

Well, I have just started a project to recycle a pair of cases with 250 watts, and I just bolted one on top of the other. Given the basic electronics involved the two should work very well. So, all the talk about needing 300 watts seems to be making you impulsive. You could wait till the prices drop and grab another 250 watt case at or atx. I'm still thinking through this project, so far I've assembled the parts(blue tinted acrilic for the casecover). Invention is the father of the mother.

An AMD-approved 250 watt P/S should be quite adequate for the setup you're describing. If you already have the 250 watter -- then use it. If buying a new P/S, though, then I'd go with the 300 since it might be more likely to be useful in the future.
