Do I really need 10 megs down? hmmm

Do I really need 10 megs down?

  • Hell yes you do! Don't even think about slowing down.

  • Nah, you'll probably be fine with 2.

  • Hell no, drop down to 2, or even less.

  • Which way did he go, George?

I'm with Time Warner and have been on a company discount plan ($35/mo or so) for as long as I can remember. Well, apparently they stopped offering that so my plan just went up $10/mo.

I've been at 7 megs down until TW recently upgraded their 7 line to a 10 line.

I'm not a gamer and the only things I generally download are TV shows and things like that which just run overnight anyway.

TWs next step down is 2 megs which would take me from the new $45/mo price down to $31/mo for a year. Then it'd go up to $36/mo which is about where I was but at the lesser speed.

Anyone else go down and realize you can't stand it and jump back up?

Other option is to find a new ISP but I don't think it will be that cheap. Hmmm.

I've got ~8Mb (actual), and while it's nice for patches and drivers, for my main bandwidth usage I'm mostly limited by upload. I could live with slower downloads since I'm stuck seeding at 100KB/s.

I'm on Brighthouse (which uses Time Warner Road Runner) and still at 7 down/whatever up. I keep getting flyers to upgrade to 40 down/? up but it costs another $30 a month and the boss (aka the wife) says no. I need a second IP much more than I need more speed.

No cap with TW. It really depends on what you do. If you download large files, then yeah. If you just surf, then no. I have RR Turbo and really like it.

I don't think I'd take an 8mb drop for only $10 a month less. I could do fine on 2mb, but I think that's worth around $25 a month, not $36.

I would need it, but it depends how you use it?

I'm on Brighthouse here since I moved to the other side of town and Comcast doesn't service this spot. I don't know who Brighthouse runs through here, but it's godawful. The bandwidth is fine and as advertised, but it cuts out randomly and the ping is awful.

Sorry, had to rant.

They're always upgrading the download speeds on cable, but for me its more or less been a "who fucking cares" scenario since they got 5mb or so. I'd always prefer more upload speed or the removal of a cap. 6 to 12mb/s down doesn't really change anything. There are times I suppose I can make use of the extra down bandwidth but they're rare and I'd prefer to be able to do run game servers with more people.

Right now I get 15 down/1 up and at least for the time being there are no caps. I think I would trade 7mb/s down for another 1 up but of course that isn't an available option.

I think Brighthouse uses Roadrunner everywhere.

One thing I miss about Comcast was all the free speed bumps I got. I am not sure if they do that now or not, but I got 3 or 4 free speed bumps over the course of the 10 years I had them. Brighthouse doesn't seem to do that.

My experience with Time Warner (at least in western NY) has been that they're more than happy to offer you deals to stay if you threaten to switch because of a price hike.

I hate how they do the tiers. A lot of people would be fine with 5, but they will never offer that. It's 1-2mb or 10+ for way more. They know 1-2 is barely enough and that most people will upgrade and hardly use it. Think I pay $50/m for 12mb.

If another company in my area offered 5mb for like $30/month they'd have my money.

Hmmm actually looking my Cox in my area it looks like they offer 3mb for $35/m. Not ideal but not as bad as I thought. Might be worth it.

I have 5mbps and I probably never use that much, I had 3, they bumped me up to 5, didn't notice any difference. I do not do much of online gaming so I guess I don't see any requirement, the only thing that can potentially use such bandwidth is torrents but then again its limited to # of seeders.

Hmm. Our Cable starts at 10/1 and goes up to 50/5. Intro pricing on the 10/1 is $35/mo apparently. We were at 45/mo for 10/1 but it jumped to 56 recently. Thread reminded me to call in and they could offer me $45 /mo again for a one time fee of $25. Hmm.. Oh wait, we can take half off and only charge $12.50.

Prompted me to look into Uverse, which apparently is finally available in area. Could get 12 down for $30/mo for a year, but $48 after and a $100 install.

Took the cable discount for now.

Wouldn't be able to. Remember in 2004 I had 6mbps, then moved and the highest was 2mbps. It sucked.

Couldn't imagine only having 2mbps these days. I'm considering trying to make another deal with FioS to get on a contract and package for lower price, might drop my speed in half down to 15mbps but think I'll be ok with that.

Depends on how tight your economy are. If it's NP I wouldn't bother to save 9 dollars

I went from 15 to 3 (Fios to Cox) and I only notice it when downloading large files... aarrrggggg.

Other than that no. But I also don't stream movies and have several people using it at the same time. I saved abotu $20 a month and don;t have to deal with verzions billing issues anymore.
Also whats the upload rate?

while you may not need 10, I would say 2 is too slow, especially for sort of decent streaming video (netflix et al)

I was going to say something like this. I went from Comcast -> DSL -> FiOS and I won't be going back to DSL unless my financial situation forces me to. For you, I'd say something around 5-7 would be the sweet spot for you.
