Do I need to reinstall windows?

I'm replacing my current motherboard with a different one. (first ones memory controller went bad)

They are both nforce 2 ultra chipsets and I don't use the onboard sound or video. Will I need to reinstall windows?

old mboard DFI Lanparty nf2 ultra B

new mboard Gigabyte GA-7N400S-L

thanks!

I would think that most people with 10K+ posts and five years of experience would have found the search button. Or at least look at the posts made in the same day -- this is the second post in the last 3 hours about this topic.

- Reportedly, Windows 2000 and XP can be tricked into doing this stuff for you. The procedure is this: Shut down, install your new hardware, power on, and enter your system BIOS. Make sure your First Boot Device is set to CDROM. Insert the Windows 2000/XP setup CD and boot from this disk. (You may have to "press a key to boot from CD" as the prompt says.) Skip the initial prompt asking to repair your existing installation. Then proceed to the screen where you select a partition, and choose your existing Windows partition. Setup will detect your existing installation and ask you to repair. Say yes. When Windows Setup is complete, you should have a fully working installation with all your old user and application profiles. Everything should be intact, except your hardware and driver settings, leaving it fresh for your new motherboard.

Here's a little tidbit I got from the faq 🙂

Don't let the multiple post Nazi's get you! 🙂 I will admit it is a little annoying seeing the same questions posted over and over, almost as annoying as the self appointed post police who will waste time and space flaming you for your post (like you could delete it if you wanted to)

But in regards to you question, it is possible to swap mobos without doing a reinstall, but often leads to more problems than its worth. I highly recommend reformatting and reinstalling anytime you swap mobos.

That's a windows "repair" isn't it? WinXP will ask for the admin password. If you only have 1 account and don't log in, I hope you wrote it down somewhere. I learned that lesson the hard way.

I found no evidence that the people complaining about the lack of search are socialists, let alone NAZIs.

These questions get asked frequently. FAQs, also known as Frequently Asked Questions, are created to solve these issues. People continue to ask without consulting the FAQs.

You didn't search or read the FAQ either, did you?

i wouldn't unless there were problems. the one time i've done it (a via kt266a to nforce2 swap, so much more 'complex' than what you're doing) quake3 and other benches revealed that performance was the same or better if i didn't reinstall windows.

i seriously think that 'reformatting' and 'reinstalling' windows are more of a nerd badge of honor than actual necessary procedures.

Real geeks know how to keep a system working without a reinstall. 😉

Since they're both NF2 chipset I would:

1st try just swapping the mobo. Same chipsets make work out just fine, if not

2cd do the repair install, if didn't work then

3rd Reformat & reinstall.

Doing the first two won't take much time anyway.

What a stupid generalization. Try again. 🙂

I don't think Snakexor has a fetish for cleaning equipment, I just think he's a bit mistaken.

lol n0cmonkey, i was talking to you. 😛

I realize that, but it was more fun this way. 🙂

Just a quick update.
Popped the new motherboard/power supply in and it looks like I'm good to go. The random reboots seem to have stopped and my system appears to be stable once again.

You are 50/50 on that answer w/ the 2nd half being the incorrect portion.
