i remember back when I first got my 8500 running on win98 pro, people told me to reformat my comp before installing the card. they then told me to install direct x, vid card drivers, then oc program.

is it the same case now for win xp and 6800 GT? what necessary steps should i take before the card goes in so that I can maximize the card's potential. thank you.

As long as you run DriverCleaner in safe mode to remove the 8500, you should have no issue installing your 6800GT without a reformat.

Removing the old drivers through Add\Remove programs should be fine if you're going from Nvidia to Nvidia or ATI to ATI. If you're going ATI to Nvidia or vice-versa, then run Driver Cleaner (and Cab Cleaner from inside Driver Cleaner) to remove every bit of the old drivers so you don't have any weird issues.

I have never heard of Win98 pro...

I think those people telling you to format your HD just to install a video card were either mean or stupid.

No, before Driver Cleaner, it was a really good idea.
