Do I need to do anything special to use my RAID IDE channels as normal IDE? Do I just install the drivers for the Highpoint controller and use them as extra IDE channels, not looking to do RAID, just put a small HDD on each channel.

no, nothing, just dont enable raid in the bios for the raid controler.

There might be a setting in the BIOS you need to change.

You should be able to use the Raid channels as regular ide for hard drives with no problems, but most are not able to be used for cdroms or other optical devices.
