Do I need thermal compound?

I am putting a 2500 barton on a A7N8X Deluxe. My sink/fan is a Thermaltake Volcano 9. Do I need a thermal compound? I will not immediately be overclocking. If not, can I apply compound at a later date?
 
Need no, recommended yes, so if you plan on adding later and not going to OC the CPU now chances are you can get away with it but watch your Temps
 
Sure you can run a Barton 2500 without thermal compound. Oh, and that burning smell? It's nothing.

Thermal compound, for the love of god. Read the Arctic Silver guide to application.

No, seriously - you definitely NEED it.
 
Yes, you should allways have some sort of thermal compound/pad. I just worked on an Athlon rig here not to long ago that was spontaniously shutting down and restarting. Pulled off the HSF with a hunch and there was no TIM. Put on some ASIII and problem solved.
 
Gosh you all have me in a panic. I better go put some on my XP1700 that has been running stock the last 3 months without any and under 50C's 😀

I dont have a frys by me but they should if they dont im sure they have some other name brand or non brand that will work just find, i myself dont have AS3 but some other cheap sh!t and my temps are fine even know i overclocked my 1700+ to about 2.08ghz and not even bursting 50c w/ asus q-fan on.
 
I think I burned out my CPU applying Artic Silver. I was being lazy and wasn't careful and dropped a little on the PCB of the CPU. I thought I removed it all but upon installing it, it would not boot up. Anyone know if my CPU is a gonner or is there a way to salvage it? I tried different things to try and fix it but no luck. I feel stupid.

Is it the retail 1700+? The one that has a thermal pad on it? I think he is contemplating running metal to core with nothing in between, which is a definate and absolute NO-NO.

If you have nothing in between then I think you got very, very lucky and got surfaces that mostly mated.
 
WarCon, It's an OEM and it's all good as Metal to metal transfers heat better then goo between, which is meant to fill in the Air pockets. I do not condone Not using Compound, and this is my only rig without it (will have to tear out the MoBo /PSU to get off the HS/Fan) just stated it is not Needed.
 
My Volcano 9 sink/fan comes with a compound. Is that good enough to use or do I need to get something like Arctic Silver?
