An easy way to check tread depth is to use the penny test. Turn the penny upside down with Lincoln's head entering the tread groove. If you can see the top of his head, it's time to replace the tire.
I was actually going to say that but decided to be a smart-ass. You might also have wear indicators in your tread pattern. In mine they are small raised strips that go across the width of the tire within the large grooves that go all the way around the tire.
