do i need another copy of winxp?

hi, I want to use an old box to host all my test web sites that I'm developing so they're not on my main pc. That way I can work on them from my main pc, my laptop and test on all my pcs including my htpc. The question is, do I have to buy a full new copy of winxp to run on that testing pc? I remember starcraft had a spawn feature where you could just install part of the game for multiplayer use only; does winxp have such a feature?

and please don't suggest that I put linux on it because that is not what I want. I will be testing asp.net pages so I need IIS. and don't suggest I use some kind of linux adapter for .net because I don't want to use friggin linux okay?

thanks in advance!!

oop i didn't see the operating systems forum. sorry if this is in the wrong forum!!!!

😕 You're not using WinXP for multiplayer purposes. You're using it as a server in your case, and yes, you need another copy. There's no way to "spawn" an extra copy just for "multiplayer" use.

You want to run 2 copies of the OS, right?

That's fine, but be ready to shell out money for all of the MS crap you want to use.

hehe thanks for the replies fellas. just wanted to make sure i needed it,wouldn't want to pay and find out later that I didn't need to.

I'm lucky that I get discount software from school =) thanks a million fellas

Those discount versions are usually restricted in that you're not allowed to use them for anything other than educational purposes, so if your websites are commercial (or possibly even personal but not school related, the licenses differ from school to school) it might be illegal to use the discounted software.

I'll have to look into that. do they expect me to not use it for anything else? I can't pay my bills, play my games watch my pr0n? bastards!! if I remember correctly the paper they make me sign only restricts me from reselling it...

um it was an analogy.

I don't actually need all the functionality of the OS, just the server to host and run the pages. can I run both php and asp.net together? thanks again everyone

Well it is an educational license, so it would make sense that they only expect you to use it for learning the product.
