I heard that your XP license covers 1 additional mobile device. Is this true? Won't I have to call MS to have it activated if this IS true?

I believe it's one license, one computer, period.

If you install it somewhere, it has to be activated...or it shuts down after a while.

There are corporate editions that do not have the registration requirement, but they're very expensive.

At least if you're currently running a pre-XP version of windows, it's only 1/3 the cost of a scratch package.

Wow. 10%.

I'll wait the 120 days.

Ya know..........The more I think about it, the more this pisses me off. I use 2 computers. Nobody else uses these things and I use them for doing the same tasks. If I wait 120 days and install it in my other comp and then have the audacity to upgrade my original comp in a substantial way, I have to ask uncle Bill for permission to use what is rightfully mine.

I BUY the stuff I use. Maybe I should just turn to the dark side.

The last word I had was that Microsoft will allow you to activate a base desktop AND a laptop on the same ID!

I've activated 3 different systems with one OEM XP Home copy. The first two activated fine by modem but the third came up with an activation failed pls call MS. After calling and waiting for around 5 Min I explaned to the tech that I had to replace the motherboard and he gave me a new code no questions asked. I'm not sure what would happen on the forth try though. 3 systems for $95 aint' a bad deal, - M.

You rightfully own 1 piece of paper that says you can use MS' software, since you don't really own anything you have to abide by their rules. Welcome to the commercial software world, I'm sure it's only going to get worse.

<< M$ says: You MAY use one copy of your OS for both (1) one desktop/fixed machine AND (1) one portable [laptop] device. >>

Nope, as it has already been stated, 1 copy-1 machine.

Would you like to point us to where you see otherwise in their EULA???

Just to clarify, WinXP personal use EULA is one license = one machine.

But someone earlier in the thread said that this also applies to OfficeXP, and I have it directly from Microsoft that this is not true. OfficeXP EULA allows me to install OfficeXP to my desktop and to my mobile computer (but no more). I have made several installations back and forth of Office XP Standard on my notebook and desktop computers (no hardware changes between them) during testing of RC1, RC2 and RTM over the past four months. The online automatic activation process has worked flawlessly each time.

Microsoft did allow the release candidates of WinXP to be installed on multiple machines as long as you called. There was no need to make up a story. I told the truth, and they gladly allowed me to install a single copy of each of the release candidates on two PCs. I think, however, that if I called them and told them I felt that I should be able to use one copy of the final commercial release on two PCs, they'd tell me to get stuffed!

:D
