Do I need a Tuner

My question is this, do I need the tuner to do anything in highdefinition? Xbox 360, DVD players, HD programming, etc.? Or is the DVD and 360 automatically in high definition without a tuner? I will be getting an HDMI cable (recommend one or all the same?).

Also, I have a standard comcast cable box, would I need a hi-def one to get HD programming?

You need a tuner(which the first one has) to be able to watch over-the-air HD. That's it.

Are the HDMI cables the standard kind? To connect a 360 to a TV? So since I have comcast cable I would not need or get the one with the tuner is what you are saying?

if the TV doesn't have a tuner, then you do need to get the box from comcast that has a tuner to watch cable HD. You can also get a separate tuner, and an HD antenna to get free over-the-air HD. you might consider that if you live in an area with a good signal (not me though--Chicago= palster walls + massive signal interference)

just get a regular HDMI cable--don't be swayed into paying 60 bucks for one at BB or anwhere else. I believe they can be had for as cheap as $15?

EDIT: looks like mono has them for $4? :shocked:

A tuner is needed for watching broadcast TV (from cable or over the air), not needed for connecting your own sources.

If you have cable, look for a TV with a built in QAM tuner. This way you can get HD over cable depending on what your cable company provides.

This is only if he does not want to have a cable box. I also believe that QAM tuners don't allow you to access some of the cable channels.

So I think I'll just get the hi-def comcast box. I also live in chicago and I can't imagine an antenna being any good. So no tuner then. Thanks alot for your help guys, saved me 30$

Hi-def Comcast costs more of the period of a year versus having the built in tuner. Plus in the long run you'd be paying out well over what you could have spent to get the tv with built in tuner.

Just remember by 2012 (5 years everyone must be using QAM (digital) or HD signal per the FCC) it was 2009 but the pushed it back.
