Do I need a sound card or will an ATI 4350 w/ HDMI do it all?

The onboard sound doesn't seem to work, nor an older sound card plugged into a PCI slot. Of course, I will just install the 4350 video card and see, but then I wouldn't know if the onboard sound is actually working, but with the problem possibly being a bad rear plug or missing software.

Usually, if a video card sports HDMI out, and you use that, you can get the Audio through HDMI. Also, I've noticed that on a GPU that has native HDMI (without an adapter), it tends to disable onboard sound.

It doesn't disable the onboard sound, it simply becomes the default sound device when installed. You have to manually select the sound output device (for each user account) in XP.
