Grand total for one of the fastest systems on the face of the earth:$3625

OK, so i went over the budget but this post was just to make a point, $3000 is a hell of a lot for a computer!

You didn't even include powersupply, case, or optical drives... probably making the total closer to $4000.

ok, then we can cut it back to a single processor for now, and it's under $3000 with the case , powersupply and opticals, LOL.

Kitomaru don't spend your hard earned money, spend ~$1000, which can easily be done and have a nice system.

Are you building the machine, because you said you didn't have much knowledge of parts. Also 3g's is way to much for a computer, unless you go all out which isn't worth it. Go next to top-of-the-line and overclock. Also, don't get a 940 mobo, because that is for servers. You have to use slower ecc registered ram and special parts. Here's my list:

Optical Drives
NEC 3250-$46
NEC 3250-$46

Case
Lian-Li V1200-$200

Mobo
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR-$196

CPU
AMD Athlon 4000+(SD)-$489

Video Cards
BFG 6800 Ultra OC-$515
BFG 6800 Ultra OC-$515

Hard drive
Samsung Spinpoint 160gb SATA II drive-$115

RAM
Mushkin Redline 1gb (2x512mb)-$178

PSU
Seasonic Silencer 600w--$150

Total=about $2200
Plus 36"high-def Sony triniton=$3000
Note: Most of this stuff is overpriced/not worth it.(Prices from newegg)

Do I need one?

SATA is an interface format. If it's not built into your motherboard you can't.

Conventional hardrveis connect via an ide cable

SATA looks like This.

edit: forgot to say if you don't have SATA built in your motehrboard I think you do need to buy the card

Don't dish out advice if you don't know what you are talking about. You can have Serial ATA even if you are running a 10 year old PC. All you need is a contoller card.

Take the following advice from a fellow 14-year-old.

$1500 or even $1000 != POS or "cheap" ($1000 is a lot of money--don't trivialize it!) computer, especially if you build it yourself and do research on the parts beforehand! You also generally get more for your money by staying away from top-of-the-line but upgrading once in a while--you'll be able to get newer stuff more often, and since midrange video cards, for example, of one generation often surpass or at least compare favorably to the previous generation's high-end stuff, this is a better option. Also consider what little more you get for spending hundreds of additional cash on high-end stuff. In the long run, buying a $3000 computer is a pretty poor decision.
