Thanks for all the responses. If I'm understanding this right, I should problably save my money for now and wait to get a real good DVD player or I should get the Xbox hdtv cables.
I dont have to make a decision on this anytime soon. I knew some of you guys would know a heck of a lot more about it than I do.

Thanks

you don't need to hack anything M4H, just buy 15 dollars worth of cables-I think they're called the **gasp** Microsoft HD Pack. It will give you compnent cables to go to your TV for progressive scan, and an optical out for dolbydigital 5.1 and dts to your receiver. Just enable all these options in the MS Dashboard. Cables should be about 15-20 bucks. This is the only way you will get progressive scan, or at least the cheapest I believe unless you go SCART (VGA.)

IIRC the XBOX will only do progressive scan with games, not DVD.

Could be wrong though, I don't follow the XBOX scene at all but I think that's the case.

nope, wth component cables it will do 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i. This will be reflected in DVDs as well.

I'm 99% sure I'm right on this, & a Google search backs me up.

really? then what are dvds in? 480i?

Yup.

Viper GTS

then will a progressive scan dvd player look THAT much better on a HD CRT?

i say in the mean time, get the mad catz universal component cables from best buy for $9.99 They have the propriartary av out connectors for BOTH xbox and ps2, so you can have a nice picture from both systems. For 10 bucks, they're pretty good.

I have a Samsung 32" EDTV with a panasonic progressive scan DVD player (using component cables). My tv is placed about 10feet away from the couch and difference can be pretty noticable.

Which is better, component cables or S-video cables?

Indeed. When I first got the set last year, I used the included s-video cable. The quality looked some what "fuzzy". With the $20 RCA component cable I got from walmart, the image is alot crisper and looks almost HDTV like from far distance.😀

BTW the $20 RCA component cables were the higher end version walmart carried, they also had some generic $15 variety. (so the cable is pretty darn cheap) Don't get suckered in at bestbuy/retail outlets into some "superUber made of gold" cable that works just as good as the cheap stuff at walmart when you buy the TV.

Thanks for the tip on the cables. I'll pick up a set this weekend.

Since your TV is HD compatible I would definitely get a P-scan DVD player.

I don't know how good the deinterlacer in that particular TV is but I suspect if you get a DVD player with a Faroudja chip, it would put out a much better picture than an interlaced DVD player through the TV's deinterlacer.

The in thing right now in DVD players are upscaling DVD players. Ones that increase the resolution of DVDs from 480p to 720p or even 1080i. I've got the Zenith DVB318 which "supposedly" throws out a nice picture but I haven't noticed much of a difference. Maybe I'm spoiled, who knows but people on AVS forum swear by it. You might want to check out one of the upscaling DVD players that are out now.

Edit: BTW, the compelling feature on the Zenith DVB318 was that it displayed upconverted pictures on component (analog) cables which is supposedly against RIAA rules. They recently crippled the 318 so that it only upconverts through DVI. You can flash back the bios to an older one to allow the player to display using component out.

Thanks, I may wait a bit before I get one of those. I see they sell around $250. I was originally looking to spend about half that much on progress scan dvd player. I would have to figure a way to sneak that one around the wife 😉.

Thanks

The xbox is capable of doing progressive scan with DVDs as well.

That is list.

I bought mine for $160. You should be able to get it around that price if you look around. I am quite sure they will be highly sought after because they are the only upconverting DVD players using component. I got about 5 of my friends to buy them. 🙂
